Job Description:  A medical device Patent Searcher to conduct patent, scientific, business and other IP-related information searches.  Review and synthesize search results.  Present deliverables succinctly to patent attorneys to enable IP legal assessments and to support decision-making within the R&D, Commercial and overall business process. Main outputs are:

  • Prior art searches
  • Patent opposition/Invalidity studies
  • Freedom-to-operate searches
  • Novelty and patentability searches
  • Due diligence support
  • Create and monitor third party patent applications, patent families and legal status alerts; Create and monitor current awareness alerts on industry related topics

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains positive and effective relationships with attorneys by understanding their information needs, creating smart search strategies (databases, classes and codes, keywords and indexing) and proposing cost-effective and timely information solutions
  • Conducts accurate, comprehensive and thoughtful searches using available resources
  • Creates and delivers thorough, well written and highly professional reports in a timely manner that are clearly structured and that address the issues; takes ownership of work
  • Collaborates successfully with cross-functional teams to support multifaceted projects
  • Follows best practices and internal team procedures:  Actively develops and applies skills and knowledge that advances our organizations

Key Skills

  • General intellectual curiosity with a passion for uncovering information, the desire to transform that information into insight by answering the “so what” and creativity in communicating the story
  • Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or computer science preferred
  • Patent searching experience in the healthcare/medical device industry, in a legal and/or library setting preferred
  • Good knowledge in patent law or training in intellectual property
  • Understanding of major patent related databases and hosts, knowledge of text-mining and visualization tools preferred
  • Ability to quickly review, analyze and synthesize technical information
  • Exceptional customer focus and high degree of professionalism to allow agile and proactive responses to changing business demands and opportunities
  • Works effectively under pressure with the ability to prioritize workload and respond quickly; Takes ownership of results
  • Participates with team members in the creation of new ideas and processes; shows initiative in gaining cross-disciplinary perspectives
  • Fosters an environment that encourages inclusion and respect for diverse opinions
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) principles and applications a plus

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree within a subject field relevant to Abbott’s business or scientific interests including computer science, chemistry, biology or engineering required, or relevant experience. Master’s Degree preferred, with course specialization in computer science , chemistry, biology, engineering, business or Information/Library Science.

  • Years Ph.D. or M.S. with intensive subject expertise 3-4
  • B.S. with extensive industry experience in lab and patent searching 4-5

Location

This is a full-time position located at Abbott Headquarters (Abbott Park, IL). Will consider other Abbott locations in the Midwest. This is not a 100% telecommuting position.
