Abilities First, Inc., a CQL accredited organization, has been making a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities for over fifty years. Starting out as The Little Red School House in 1962, Abilities First, Inc. has evolved into the Hudson Valley’s premiere provider of support services for individuals with developmental disabilities. We offer a wide variety of services including school and preschool programs, day habilitation, residential habilitation, community habilitation, service coordination and employment services.

Under the direction of the School Principal, the itinerant Vision Teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with visual impairments in a variety of education settings. The person in this position is responsible for supporting the delivery of instruction for students with visual impairments, such that the students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplement aides, accommodations, and other needed supports.

Requirements

• Appropriate New York State Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired
• Demonstrated understanding of the federal, state, and local mandates governing the determination and delivery of special education services.
• Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, and school based on staff, students, parents and community members
• Excellent human relations skills and a working knowledge of the English language in written and verbal form
