The Freight Pay Specialist is responsible for acting as key point of contact for carriers when auditing the invoices of loads on a daily basis and resolving discrepancies by leveraging the Transportation Management System and Freight Payment System. Also responsible for processing and filing freight claims, analyzing cost trends, minimizing unnecessary costs such as accessorial and expedited services, communicating with carriers, DC personnel, and internal Academy Sports + Outdoors team members while support service level agreements and meeting key performance indicators. This role includes supporting transportation routing, delivery appointments, and all department and companywide initiatives.

Job Description:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent years of experience preferred. High School Diploma or GED required.

Work Experiences:

• 3 to 5 years of accounting, freight pay, logistics, inventory management or transportation experience
• Demonstrated experience in using payment and auditing management systems

Responsibilities:

• Manage strategic and long-term relationships with Carriers, Vendors and DCs to monitor, measure, and escalate invoicing issues; monitor and report carrier accuracy
• Timely completion of month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities and journal entries including month-end variance analysis, account reconciliations, and costing trends. Quantify risks and opportunities.
• Ensure integrity of results reported and confidentiality thereof
• Act as escalation point and support Routing Specialists with routing shipments and setting delivery appointments
• Deal with all distributor claims regarding damages, overages, and missing items. Work through resolving carrier claim issues. Review information and make decisions for how the claims will be distributed and resolved.
• Develop standard invoicing, carrier management and claims processes under direction of Manager, Logistics Operations
• Facilitate cross-training for Routing Specialists to grow skill sets on various focus areas
• Create weekly recaps on trends, root causes, and status updates with root cause analysis to drive out inefficiencies, inaccurate data, and unnecessary costs
• Provides informal guidance to Routing Specialists on utilizing the most cost-effective method
• Adhere to routing guidelines and make appropriate carrier decisions, not to exceed the $750 Out-of-Tolerance limits
• Develop a thorough understanding of Academy policies, procedures and safety rules
• Responsibilities may change; team members may be required to perform other tasks as assigned
• Special projects and participation in various initiatives, including new system implementation, updates or upgrades

Physical Requirements & Attendance

• Requires on call after hours, Monday thru Friday, including weekends and some Holidays
• Acceptable level of hearing and vision to perform job duties
• Adhere to company work hours, policies, procedures and rules governing professional staff behavior
