Organizational Overview
The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
Position Description
BNL’s Collider-Accelerator Department Operations Division is looking for an Accelerator Maintenance Support Coordinator that will provide operational support to the organization. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day support to various groups within the department relating to: accelerator systems maintenance, upgrades, installation, commissioning and operation, and will work with the department accelerator maintenance support group providing general operations support to the department. The candidate should be organized and have experience working in a fast-paced environment with numerous ongoing priorities, as well as have experience and the willingness to work with a diverse team of engineers, scientists, technicians and administrative staff, and will be expected to interact with team members at all levels, as well as external organizations within BNL. Project planning, work planning and control best practices will be utilized to ensure initiatives are properly planned and executed in a safe and thoughtful manner. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in the coordination of operational matters relevant to accelerator operations that affect experimental or programmatic areas of the department
Act as an alternate liaison to other divisions, such as Integrated Facility Management (IFM), in addition to project managers, outside contractors, and other entities to coordinate their work with accelerator operations
Assist in the coordination and management of work requests for the department
Qualify and serve as department work control coordinator to ensure all work is properly planned and implemented to prevent accidents, injuries and regulatory violations
Work with the maintenance support group leader and division management to maintain efficient use of office, laboratory and storage space
Assist in planning and scheduling for operating and shutdown periods in the department
Assist in planning, scheduling and execution of new systems installation, commissioning and operation
Assist in the coordination for the decommissioning of legacy equipment
Participate in Environmental Safety & Health inspections, in support of various committees and reviews and assist with closing identified deficiencies as applicable
Assist the property representative in managing assets
Perform duties as the facility Alternate Local Emergency Coordinator (A-LEC), such as directing staff in response and recovery activities following any onsite incident or event
