Who We Are

Since its founding in 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School (“Challenge Prep”) has provided students and families with a successful K-8 program in Far Rockaway, Queens. Challenge Prep now seeks an innovative visionary to serve as Founding High School Assistant Principal of its high school opening in August 2020. Challenge Charter High School (“CCHS”) will offer a unique early college and career and technical education (“CCTE”) program to ensure that students graduate prepared to be successful in the college and/or career pathway of their choice. CCHS will provide an academically rigorous program that integrates content with real-world technical skills found in the following fields: Aviation, Culinary Arts, Health Sciences, and Hospitality. Through strategic collaborations with industry partners, students will have access to personalized academic and social-emotional learning sequences, authentic field experiences, career counseling, and college coursework. It is understood that we are one organization with multiple sites and it is expected that all members of the team collaborate to support all of our scholars.

 

Understanding the Role

CCHS’ Founding Assistant Principal will report to the Challenge Charter High School Principal. The Founding Assistant Principal will be responsible for contributing to a set of pre-opening school preparations, as well as performing comprehensive ongoing responsibilities. Examples include but are not limited to:

 

Pre-Opening Responsibilities include assisting the school leader with:

  • Building the High School instructional program, including designing the curriculum framework and identifying necessary educational resources
  • Collaborating in the development and coordination of college and industry partnerships
  • Hiring and providing both orientation and training for instructional and administrative staff
  • Engaging in community outreach and relations initiatives
  • Setting high expectations for CCHS’ performance and daily culture for learning, coordinating it with the other Challenge Prep grade-level programs
  • Providing oversight for and implement the academic and CTE program, ensuring ongoing alignment with the approved Charter mission and specifications
  • Establishing positive relationships with all stakeholders by effectively communicating and demonstrating self-awareness
  • Building a school leadership team and delegating responsibilities as needed
  • Facilitating and coordinating annual high school strategic planning and articulate related initiatives
  • Implementing all high school Board of Trustee policies and procedures as directed by the CEO
  • Making hiring recommendations for all High School teachers, and other instructional staff
  • Supervising and evaluating all high school teachers and instructional staff members
  • Establishing and cultivating positive and productive relationships with college and industry partners to support the school’s CCTE program.
  • Making recommendations for and overseeing high school professional development activities for teachers and instructional staff, and aligning them with each teacher’s development needs and goals.
  • Being the public “face” of the High School program, including public speaking and being the school designee, representing the school at public meetings.

 

Ongoing Specific Responsibilities include assisting the school leader with:

  • Professional experience within a career and technical education and/or competency-based education setting

  • Strategic problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills with students, families, staff, and community members
  • Exceptional management and organizational skills
  • Positive experience in taking the initiative, assuming accountability and being productive in attaining measurable goals and mission accomplishments
  •  Ability to plan strategically and effectively, as well as adapting to unforeseen situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective systems that support the school program, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to create a positive school culture that is welcoming, fun, and conducive to learning
  • Master’s Degree or higher degree in education or a related field and all appropriate certifications
  • At least three years of experience in a senior administrative position in education

Minimum Qualifications

For Phase 1 of the process, in addition to the cover letter, resume, and interview, candidates must also provide three professional references, one of which must be from a direct supervisor.

Work Year

This is a full time, twelve months position. All staff is expected to attend a weeklong summer planning institute at the University of Connecticut which will offer an essential opportunity for staff to be involved in developing the school’s culture and instructional program.
