Head of Instruction/Assistant Professor

Champlain College Library, located in beautiful Burlington, Vermont, seeks a librarian to join their award-winning library team to provide high-quality academic library services in an innovative setting. 

The Head of Instruction will lead and provide strategic vision to Champlain College’s on-campus and online information literacy programs. This position requires someone interested in programmatic information literacy development. We seek someone with bold, innovative, student-centered ideas, with an interest in areas such as critical information literacy, inquiry-based instruction, and experiential and project-based learning. 

The Head of Instruction plays a vital role in the library to coordinate and lead Champlain College library’s instructional services in all formats and venues to ensure that the library remains vibrant and responsive to our academic environment. The Head of Instruction will provide leadership and vision to the Teaching Librarian team to deliver highest-quality, innovative student experiences. This position reports to the Library Director. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Work collaboratively across the library and the wider College campus to coordinate and lead the delivery of the library's traditional and online course-embedded and stand-alone information literacy instruction programs.
  • Advocate for information literacy’s essential focus within teaching and learning amongst campus stakeholders. 
  • Lead the College’s teaching librarian team to provide instructional design, innovative tools and services, and teaching materials for a range of student-centered, online, and in-person information literacy sessions.
  • Play a leading role in student learning and outcomes assessment, utilizing a wide range of direct and indirect data gathering, analytical and evaluative activities to report the efforts and value of the library's information literacy program.
  • Develop, revise, and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to support information delivery services.
  • Develop initiatives responding to emerging professional trends relating to information literacy instruction, assessment, instructional technologies, digital scholarship, and best practices in pedagogy in higher education and facilitates engagement with this information among the librarian team.
  • Infuse elements of equity, inclusion, and diversity into information literacy instruction. 
  • Participate in regular reference services, collection development, general outreach, and teaching in the library's innovative inquiry-based information literacy instruction program as part of the library's award-winning Teaching Librarian team. This position may require regular weekly evening reference duties throughout the semester.
  • Engage in, and demonstrate flexibility, teamwork and positive, open communication. Assist in additional areas of library duties as required. 

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in library science or related field from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent required. Must also have at least 2 years post-degree experience in a library. 
  • Relevant experience in information literacy instruction. Related experience is also desirable in areas such as instructional design, instructional technologies, digital humanities, and outcomes-based assessment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Aptitude for or experience in leading professional development training for other librarians.
  • A successful candidate will value and enjoy building relationships with faculty, as this will be crucial to success in this position. Must have demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills; strong service orientation; ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff. Experience working with online faculty and students is also a plus. 
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement projects, prioritize and manage a range of responsibilities. 
  • The successful candidate will display creativity, initiative and flexibility.
