Position Summary:The Advising Specialist at the Woodburn Center provides academic advising and guidance to students; civic engagement, student services, College Access Programs (CAPs); develop and facilitate a student-focused effort to boost student persistence, retention, and degree completion rates, student clubs, ensure students have access to the Textbook Lending Library, student club meeting rooms; understands the value and significance of cultural competency. This role also leads campus recruitment efforts for individuals located in North Marion area.
Essential Functions
Student Advising & Recruitment
- Provides academic, career, transfer, college financing and success/persistence planning to students in our general education and career technical programs
- Directs students to on-campus and community resources as well as networking opportunities with other programs
- Develops and implements a holistic outreach and recruitment plan for all of North Marion County, to include connecting with all area high schools, connections with community organizations with an educational focus, workforce development organizations, area businesses and identifying adult student populations within our community to target for recruitment
- Provides relevant information to diverse community groups about programs that offer access to greater academic and personal opportunities
Student Recruitment - Actively participates in the retention and recruitment of students
- Oversees recruitment efforts at fairs and events including booth set-up and take-down, scheduling of students and staff
- Develops and implements a holistic outreach and recruitment plan for all of North Marion County, to include connecting with all area high schools, connections with community organizations with an educational focus, workforce development organizations, area businesses and identifying adult student populations within our community to target for recruitment
- Ensures adequate supply of informational materials
- Prepares for and gives group presentations, campus tours/overviews, student orientations, workshops, college and career fairs, and other activities
Student Academic Success - Fosters and develops ongoing relationships with students to support them in setting, tracking, and modifying incremental steps towards completion of long-term benchmarks
- Models actions that align with department culture of growth mindset, resilience, agency and self-efficacy
- Develops a system for follow-up and follow-through in order to build trust and confidence in students, co-workers and colleagues across the campus
- Structures dialogue to help students recognize needs, identifies barriers that hinder, and acknowledges values and strengths that contribute to their academic persistence and retention
- Serve a diverse population of students and interact with internal and external partners demonstrating the qualities of a culturally competent individual
Department Responsibilities - Participates in the annual planning process and evaluation of program services
- Collects, analyzes and utilizes data in order to make informed decisions that promote the continual improvement of student success initiatives
- Coordinates presentations about program services, qualifications, and expectations
- Shares information and builds networks of support with Salem campus staff
- Proctoring GED test, maintaining GED files and records, transmitting file and information to State Department of Education (GED Chief Examiner)
Other Functions - Performs all other job-related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSAssociate's degree from an accredited institution
-AND-Two years of related experience working with diverse groups (i.e. marginalized, economically disadvantaged, neuro-diverse, second language learners, culturally distinct, gender differences, individuals with disabilities)
-AND-Bilingual Spanish

- Experience advising at a community college level

- Experience giving presentations and/or facilitating group discussions

Terms of Employment: - This is a 100%, 12-month classified assignment of the B3 band and grade.
- May require flexible work schedule to meet department/program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends.
