What does an Public Relations Specialist do at companies like CHICAGO RED STARS?

The Chicago Red Stars Public Relations Specialist will work within the Marketing & Communications team reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications. This role will focus on elevating the Red Stars brand and product lines through owned media, earned media, and influencers in order to drive awareness, engagement, and revenue.
 
Responsibilities
  • Strategy & Planning
    • Align with the leadership team and coaches quarterly to identify key product pushes, partnerships, theme games, players we should be elevating, etc.
    • Think creatively about storylines and non-traditional ways to engage and motivate key segments through our owned channels, earned channels, and influencer relationships
    • Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications team on graphics, video content, social content, budget, etc. needed to support our PR efforts 
    • Come prepared and actively participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual content calendar planning sessions led by the Director of Marketing and Communications and Content Coordinator
  •  Outside / Earned Media
    • Relationship Management
      • Build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with members of the local and national media
      • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with key influencers
      • Respond to / acknowledge media inquiries within 24-48 hours of receipt
    • Proactive Pitching
      • Identify key storylines / angles for pitching both in season as well as during offseason
      • Curate targeted media lists for pitching in Meltwater
      • Execute pitches via email, phone, and meetings as needed / required
    • Request Fulfillment
      • Respond to and fulfill all media inquiries in a timely manner including but not limited to obtaining and providing quotes, scheduling interviews with players, coaches, and staff members, providing video footage or photos, etc.
    • News Dissemination
      • Write press releases, fact sheets, and media advisories as needed - route internally for required approvals
      • Request all necessary graphics for news release accompaniment from Graphic Designer as needed
      • Schedule and run press conferences
      • Work in tandem with the Digital Marketing Specialist and Content Coordinator on a plan to disseminate news / releases across channels including but not limited to email, social, and the CRS website
  •  Game Days / Game Related Needs
    • Write / disseminate game notes and injury reports as required by the league
    • Manage media credentials
    • Manage Press Box ensuring set up, tear down, catering, and supplies/equipment are all handled
    • Manage Mixed Zone and conduct media availability with players, coaches, and staff
    • Serve as a contact for broadcast as needed
    • Travel with the team on key road games and road games that will be nationally broadcast
  • Social Media
    • Work in tandem with the Content Coordinator, Digital Marketing Specialist, and Graphic Designer to create, disseminate, and reshare content across our social channels in support of newsworthy stories and our PR efforts
  •  Miscellaneous
    • Serve as the CRS communications liaison for the league, fulfilling NWSL media/PR requests as needed
    • Produce annual Media Guide in tandem with Graphic Designer
    • Create a virtual Press Kit that lives on CRS.com in tandem with Graphic Designer and Digital Marketing Specialist
    • Manage an annual Media Day with input from the Graphic Designer, Content Coordinator, and Marketing & Communications Director
    • Assist with managing team signings and appearances as needed
  •  Tracking & Reporting
    • Track all stories including those being pitched, those in progress, and those that have been completed
    • Provide monthly reporting to the leadership team that covers
      • Press coverage / pickup (impressions, key publications, topics)
      • Pitches in progress
      • Upcoming month’s pitches
 
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of relevant experience 
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Journalism, Mass Communication, or related field preferred
  • Willingness to travel to select road games
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Proficient in AP style
  • Solid understanding of how to craft a compelling pitch
  • Strong understanding of owned and earned channels and how/where content may live
  • Sports knowledge with specific knowledge/understanding of the NWSL preferred
  • Must be able to prioritize and juggle multiple projects at the same time
  • Incredible attention to detail
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of personalities in a fast-paced environment
