ABOUT THE POSITION

Please be advised due to COVID-19 the City of Galt is not currently administering physical or written exams.  We ask that candidates submit PELLET-B scores obtained from other agencies. See "Recent PELLET B Exam Results Exemption" below.  

This is an entry-level, non-sworn position in the Police Department. Incumbents are assigned to or are currently attending a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy and must satisfactorily pass all of the requirements that lead to the possession of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in addition to passing all phases of the background process. An assignment to this classification is temporary and the incumbent is considered "at-will". Appointment to a sworn Police Officer position is contingent upon successful completion of the academy and background process then followed by final review by the Police Chief. 

Under direction of a Police Sergeant or Field Training Officer, the Police Officer Recruit attends a designated California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved police academy to learn, train and successfully perform all activities related to the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform in the capacity of a sworn City of Galt Police Officer and performs related work as required.

1. APPLICATION REVIEW: (Pass/Fail) Applicants must complete and submit an online application to be considered: 
  • A City of Galt online employment application;
  • A completed Supplemental Questionnaire and;
  • Attach a valid and legible copy of your previous PELLET- B results on agency letterhead and include the date and location of the exam along with the section scores and the total T-Score (refer to Written Exam section below).
  • Applications will be reviewed in accordance with cut-off dates.  All necessary paperwork must be submitted before the final filing date.  Incomplete applications will not pass the application review; omitted information cannot be considered or assumed.
  • Applications will be screened based on the needs of the position and the department.
Applicants passing this process will be invited to participate in a physical agility exam and the California POST Pellet-B written exam. Please be advised due to COVID-19 the City of Galt is not currently administering physical or written exams.  We ask that candidates submit PELLET-B scores obtained from other agencies. See "Recent PELLET B Exam Results Exemption" below.  

2. PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAM: The purpose of this test is to demonstrate the physical ability skills necessary to complete all elements of the test in the time allotted. Successful completion of every skill is mandatory. The exam will consist of the following:

• 500 yard run - Max time: 1 minute 45 seconds

• 165 lbs. dummy drag 30 feet - Max time: 15 seconds

• Scale a 6 ft. wall - Max time:12 seconds

NOTE: The City of Galt will NOT accept physical agility exam results from any other agencies. You must participate in and pass this exam to continue in the selection process. You will receive your results immediately following the exam. Successful agility candidates will take the written exam immediately following the conclusion of the physical agility process. (See below).

3. WRITTEN EXAM: As stated above, if you pass the agility exam, you will take the WRITTEN EXAM immediately following the conclusion of the physical agility process. This test will be administered at the same location as the agility exam.

The written exam is a multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank written examination designed to measure reading and writing ability. You will have 2 ½ hours to complete the test, which contains five sections: (1) Spelling, (2) Vocabulary, (3) Clarity, (4) Reading Comprehension, and (5) CLOZE (applicants use contextual clues to complete a passage that contains blanks/missing words). RECENT PELLET-B EXAM RESULTS EXEMPTION: If you have taken the California POST PELLET-B written exam within the last twelve (12) months and achieved a T-Score of 42 or more, you may forego the written exam administered by the City of Galt. The results must be attached to your application, submitted on agency letterhead, include the date and location of the exam, applicants name must be clearly visible on the result letter, along with the section scores for reading, writing and the total T-Score.

NOTE: POST requires candidates to wait a period of one month (30 calendar days) before taking the exam again. This applies even when taking the exam with different agencies.

4. ORAL INTERVIEW: (100%) The oral interview will consist of job-related questions. The Oral Interview is administered by the Sacramento Police Department. 

5. BACKGROUND PROCESS: If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a background investigation, which includes a criminal history check, fingerprinting, polygraph test, psychological test, credit check, and drug use history.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  • Attend and successfully complete the P.O.S.T. Basic Peace Officer Academy approved by the City of Galt. 
  • Successfully learn, both academic and physical (defensive tactics, firearm, driving, etc.) requirements of the position.
  • Control traffic flow and enforces state laws and local municipal codes violations and traffic regulations. 
  • Participate and provide support and assistance to special crime prevention and enforcement programs.
  • Perform investigative work. 
  • Attend other related training. 
Knowledge of:
  • Correct English usage including spelling and grammar.
  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
Skill in:
  • Analyzing problems and having the potential to rationally and calmly take effective action in emergency and stress situations.

  • Reading maps and mapped information.
  • Acquiring, through training, knowledge of laws, statutes, court decisions, department policies, criminal investigation theories, etc.

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school. Must provide verification of POST PELLETB T-Score of 42 or above at time of application. No experience required.

License: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and have a satisfactory driving record.   
 
Additional Requirements:  Must be 21 years of age by time of appointment to sworn police officer position. Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship prior to applying for the position of Police Officer Recruit. Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation, including a criminal history check for job related convictions, credit check, fingerprint clearance, polygraph and psychological exams. Must be able to pass a physical examination, which includes a drug screen, administered by a City appointed physician.  
Working Conditions:  Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts, pass a detailed background investigation and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including exposure to hazardous materials and all weather conditions.

Physical Demands:  Must maintain P.O.S.T. physical standards, including mobility and physical strength and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects, lift and move individuals or objects weighing to 100 pounds; ability to work in a standard office setting and to operate a motor vehicle; vision to maintain firearms qualification, to read printed materials and a computer screen, discern colors and work in a night setting; and hearing and speech to communicate before groups, in person and over the telephone and radio.
