GENERAL SUMMARY

The Fire Plans Examiner/Inspector possesses knowledge of International Fire Code, Fire Sprinkler, Fire Sprinkler Standards, Fire Alarm Standards and International Building Code.

This position reviews plans, inspect, approve, or reject all phases of public and private construction and improvements to assure compliance with plans, standards, specifications, codes and regulations, permits, and any special requirements. The Fire Plans Examiner/Inspector may recommend alternative solutions and issue correction notices or approvals as appropriate, compile reports, maintain logs and records, and perform related activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Reviews fire protection plans and related documents for compliance with International Fire Code, Fire Sprinkler, Fire Alarm Standards and the International Building Code’s policies and jurisdiction requirements for commercial, industrial and residential buildings.
  • Performs plan review and inspections for new residential buildings, commercial buildings, and remodel projects.
  • Assists designers and contractors by providing information and interpretations of fire codes and regulations, recommends necessary changes to design documents as required to obtain compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Responsible for preparing written correction letters and maintaining and updating records and database information.
  • Works with fire and building inspectors to resolve field related code issues and coordinate activities with other municipal departments as directed.
  • Conducts fire suppression inspections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED,
  • Two (2) years professional fire prevention experience,
  • Two (2) years government/municipality experience
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Current ICC Certification as Fire Inspector or Fire Plans Examiner or Equal
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of city management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical Ability: Seldom sedentary and includes walking or moving, bending, stooping, lifting (up to 50 pounds when checking fire extinguishers), looking overhead and/or working in small/cramped areas as well as using small hand tools (pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches), while performing inspection duties. Climb ladders or steps while performing inspections.
  • Environmental Factors: Some work is performed in a normal City office environment, but primarily performs onsite inspections and responds to emergencies, as needed, and is subject to potential personal danger. Some exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease and pathogenic substances. Travel to/from various locations.
