What does an ENGINEERING ASSISTANT do at companies like CITY OF PLANTATION?

This is paraprofessional office and clerical work of moderate complexity involving the support of the City Engineer and the engineering staff, performing a variety of technical engineering functions.
 
An employee in this classification is responsible for some technical assignments and assisting or participating in a variety of paraprofessional engineering assignments of routine difficulty.  Duties involve the performance of various assignments, which requires the application of some initiative and independent judgment and the interpretation of routine policies and regulations on the basis of training or knowledge gained through experience in the job. Responsibilities may also include a variety of office engineering related tasks. Under immediate supervision, the employee receives instructions orally or in writing and performs assignments in accordance with established procedures. Advice is available on usual work problems and work is subject to review upon completion for accuracy and adherence to departmental standards and procedures. 

Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.Participates in the maintenance of department engineering records and reports; files and retrieves material; posts data to records.

Inputs data, prepares formulas and hyper-links files between computer programs, such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word.

Tracks engineering permits and plan review submittal packages via the City's electronic database.

Provides technical review and recommends approval for Developer Agreements and associated documents relating to private development engineering permits and project close-out (i.e. S&S cost estimate, surety bond).

Coordinates, schedules, and attends pre-construction meetings with lead Department staff; prepares/distributes meeting minutes.

Provides assistance and direction to the development community, contractors and residents regarding the processing of engineering plans, permits and related project documents.

Collects, compiles, and participates in the analysis of information relative to department project studies; assembles and prepares collected data for further use; maintains daily and monthly records; reports work progress and results.

Operates office equipment including personal computers, fax machines, small and large format copier/scanner/printer and calculators.

Maintains up-to-date records and databases for the Department.

Sorts and distributes internal and external correspondence to the City Engineer and engineering staff; answers technical questions regarding engineering projects and provides general information to the public.

Responds to public records requests on behalf of the Department.

Assist the City Engineer in maintaining and administrating the requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and the Community Rating System.

Accepts and reviews applications for the vacation of City right-of-way/utility easements.
Prepares various technical letters and memos for signature by City Engineer.

Coordinates with residents, developers, design professionals, and contractors regarding construction projects and requirements.

Performs related work as required.Some knowledge of standard terminology, techniques, and practices of civil engineering.
Some knowledge of materials, principles, practices, equipment, and tools used in the area of assignments.

Ability to make independent investigations of engineering files to answer technical and general questions as relevant to the status of development projects.

Ability to read and interpret construction plans, surveys and sketches, blueprints, and other related documents.

Ability to interpret and explain City codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially, as applicable to engineering projects and issues, sometimes in stressful or emotional situations.

Ability to comprehend engineering plans, surveys and legal descriptions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. 

Ability to perform mathematical computations.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to organize and maintain tracking systems for complex projects. 

Duties are generally performed in a standard office environment with minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

 Must possess the ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.


DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING  
Graduation from an accredited high school/vocational school or possession of G.E.D. equivalency diploma. 
  • One (1) year of administrative experience as a paraprofessional assisting in the engineering, construction management or related field. 
  • Experience requirement may be satisfied with two (2) years of college coursework in Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in permitting for constructions projects desired.

 This is a designated "Recovery" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies..  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
