Job Summary:

To maintain and ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Skating Center skating surfaces, buildings, and grounds.

Scope of Responsibility:

Decisions can be highly classified or sensitive in nature due to the sophistication of the operation.  If one unit or operating mechanism were to have major mechanical difficulties it could have a crippling effect on skating center, park department city budget.  This position works under the supervision of the Skating Center Superintendent, provides limited direction to seasonal workers and has no budgetary responsibility. The maintenance worker has continuous public contact requiring tact, courtesy and good judgment. 

 

  1. Resurfaces the ice sheets as scheduled during the work shift and participates in other ice sheet maintenance duties as required to produce a high quality, consistent skating surface.
  2. Maintains the recommended safety level for operation of the ice resurfacer, including a daily check of fluid levels and general machine operation.  Also performs basic mechanical checks, maintenance and repairs of the ice resurfacer.  Maintains the Arena building and equipment as needed, including safety inspections of all building structures, safety padding, and rink netting system.
  3. Performs general building repairs such as electrical, plumbing, flooring, doors, signs as needed or as directed.
  4. Scoreboard and lighting maintenance and upkeep.
  5. HVAC units for Skating Center.  Operate/Maintain refrigeration systems.  Monitor system daily to assure consistent conditions according to activity or event.  Repair or arrange for repair of refrigeration components and other building mechanical systems. 
  6. Recommend, to management staff, improvements and upgrades.
  7. Provide customer service to facility users as requested or as needed:  fee collection, skate sharpening, telephone inquiries, ice rental, special event support, general attendant duties.
  8. Other duties as assigned or apparent.

 

Tools and Equipment:

  • One, and 3/4 ton trucks with and without snowplows
  • Pickup truck
  • Single axle dump trucks used in maintenance projects, snow removal, and ice control operations
  • Skid?steer loaders and other front?end loaders smaller than two-yard bucket capacity
  • Lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers (riding and walk behind), airifier, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems
  • Miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work
  • Athletic field marking equipment (dry liners and liquid sprayers)
  • Pumps and valves
  • Janitorial equipment including vacuums, mops, and brooms
  • Computer control systems for Arena ice sheet and facility HVAC Systems
  • May also operate other equipment as directed by the Supervisor

Minimum job requirements are two years of formal training beyond high school and 3 years of related experience, or equivalent.  Knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance.  Requires an EPA refrigeration certification.  Should have First Aid/ CPR and Hazardous Materials Emergency responders training;

  • Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical or under adverse field conditions, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
  • Communicate orally and in writing and to understand, follow, and transmits written and oral instructions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and occasionally in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet, humid, hot, or cold conditions.  With appropriate safety equipment, the employee may perform duties involving fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration and slippery conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is occasionally (25%) loud due to the machinery used. 

The employee must frequently (up to 70% of the time) lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally (less than 15% of the time) lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  This position is exposed to
