Occupational Summary


The Graphic Designer will create a compelling visual brand identity that is recognizable in look, style, and feel across all museum departments, but also allows for each department’s unique marketing needs and messaging. Creates visual concepts, by hand and using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate museum guests. They develop the overall layout and product design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, reports, and other collateral pieces. They will produce material for projects and ongoing products that deliver exceptional experiences for museum visitors. The Graphic Designer will represent the organization in an honest, ethical, and professional way and support a culture of integrity and professionalism.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement design solutions that are creative, appropriate, and consistent with the Museum’s brand and vision, while conveying the aims, messages, and themes of the project.
  • Work with other members of the team in the development, refinement, proofing, approval, and delivery of graphic design solutions for print, digital, display, and exhibitions.
  • Plan work by gathering and studying information and materials; illustrate concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size, and style, and related aesthetic concepts; obtains approval of concept by submitting rough layout for approval.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies, art services, and printers, and process their invoices.
  • Design layout of art or product for exhibits and displays.
  • Manage design files and support digital archiving systems.
  • Manage work schedule and coordinate production of design deliverables.
  • Assist with social media listing insights and image retrieval.
  • Provide general overall marketing administrative assistance, including tasks such as:
  1. Proofing of marketing documents.
  2. Organize tasks and assist the Marketing & PR Manager with daily work load, to ensure deadlines are met.
  3. Order and maintain marketing materials such as promotional items, brochures, etc.
  4. Serve as a resource for other department managers to ensure that they have all marketing items needed for their programs and events.
  5. Conduct science research for marketing projects.
  6. Research and prepare content for the monthly newsletter.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements


Educational/Experience Requirements

  • Minimum three years professional experience in Graphic Design or Visual Communications.
  • Associate’s Degree, or equivalent experience, required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). Able to edit text for spelling errors and punctuation.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and the ability to respond quickly to changing situations.
  • Offers their professional opinion in a productive manner and raise challenging issues.
  • Listens when their ideas are challenged and respond in a reasonable way.
  • Stays calm and focused in the face of challenging situations and works through the situation to a solution.
  • The ability to think creatively, develop, design, and create new ideas.
  • Can observe, receive, and obtain information from all relevant sources.
  • Can undertake many projects simultaneously and manage the demands of time and cost restrictions in delivering a creative, high quality product.
  • Possesses a high level of skill in creative design and typography, and a portfolio of graphic design work across print, display, and digital.
  • Be experienced in print production processes and preparing finished artwork for print, display, web, and digital.
  • Possesses advanced skills across the Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator by use of a PC.
  • Maintains awareness and familiarity with emerging technologies in order to utilize the tools required to maximize product quality.

Physical Demands

  • The ability to work in front of a computer station for long periods of time.
