The Cordova Recreation and Park District is seeking a Park Maintenance Worker II - Sports Complex position to lead maintenance operations at Mather Sports Complex. This regional sports destination features athletic facilities for baseball, soccer, basketball, racquetball and dance, in addition to cardio and weight rooms. All indoor and outdoor facilities are available to rent for league play, tournaments or other events.

About The District
The Cordova Recreation and Park District (CRPD) is one of the largest Independent Special Districts in Sacramento County.  It encompasses 75 square miles with over 40 parks and facilities and 120,000 residents of extraordinary diversity.  The District serves the park and recreation needs of the City of Rancho Cordova, Gold River, Mather, Rosemont, Larchmont, Anatolia, and additional unincorporated portions of Sacramento County. Over the next two decades, the District is expected to double the number of parks/facilities and new residents.

The Ideal Candidate
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, the incumbent has the responsibly of assisting in the direction, supervision and work of park maintenance activities. This position is required to maintain synthetic and natural turf athletic fields, park grounds, landscape areas, and facility building and amenities. This position requires a Qualified Applicator's Certificate to apply agricultural chemicals for landscape/park areas within six months of employment. 

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a journey level class within the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the entry level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Park Maintenance Worker II positions require journeyman level training and skills including, but not limited to mechanical, construction, irrigation, training, herbicide application, etc. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the division. Incumbents handle the more complex and difficult situations and issues and often direct lower level staff.

 
 Under general direction of immediate supervisor:
  • Assists immediate supervisor in training full-time and/or part-time staff concerning the safe use of tools, equipment, agricultural chemicals and maintenance/landscape machinery.
  • Plans, assigns, and coordinates the work of part-time and volunteer crews engaged in maintenance, construction, and repair work.
  • Performs skilled, semi-skilled and manual labor in landscaping, irrigation, carpentry, electrical, horticulture, masonry, mechanical, painting, custodial pest control, and other crafts as required.
  • Responsible for all aspects of sports fields daily field management (i.e. infield dirt conditioning, maintaining grass and infield edge.)
  • Check condition of grounds, playing areas, seating areas; takes steps to correct unsatisfactory conditions or reports findings to supervisor.
  • Prepare a variety of athletic facilities for events.
  • Operates mowers, edgers, blowers, weed eaters, hand and power tools, and related park maintenance machinery and equipment necessary in the performance of duties.
  • Plants, mows, weeds, and trims turf areas; trims and prunes trees and shrubs.
  • Installs, repairs, and adjusts sprinkler heads and repairs broken irrigation lines.
  • Mixes and applies insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Sprays plants, trees, and turf areas.
  • Trims and prunes trees and shrubs.
  • Responsible for the routine inspection of District facilities and execution of required maintenance repair.
  • Prepares and maintains written records and reports including inspection and incident related reports.
  • Acts as Department representative to local residents, governmental agencies, community groups, private business, and others concerning questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of park and facility operations.
  • Assists with the responsibility of storing, handling, mixing, and applying various types of fertilizers and agricultural chemicals including pesticides and growth regulators. Keeps records of all chemical and fertilizer applications and effectively communicates to CRPD staff and the public areas that are to be treated and have been treated. 
  • Works with immediate supervisor to keep fertilizer and agricultural SDS (Safety Data Sheets) updated and within easy access in compliance with the Right-To-Know regulations.
  • Under the guidance of the immediate supervisor, organizes, labels, and stores fertilizers and agricultural chemicals in accordance with federal, state, and local rules, laws, and regulations. 
  • Attends continuing education classes to maintain Qualified Applicator's Certificate or License.
  • The Park Maintenance Worker II may also perform other nonessential duties as assigned.
Education and Experience (position requirements at entry):
Equivalent to graduation from high school plus three (3) years of athletic field maintenance, natural and synthetic turf landscape maintenance including pruning, planing and plant care; two (2) years in identifying and treating pest and cultural problems within commercial landscaped areas or public park settings. Experience to include the operation and calibration of manufactured equipment dedicated solely to agricultural chemical and/or fertilizer application. Experience implementing IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices is highly desired. Must obtain a Qualified Applicator's Certificate within six months of employment and maintain license during the course of employment.  Possession of a valid California's Driver's License and a clean driving record required.

SKILLED IN: Modern methods, equipment, materials, and safety measures used in agricultural chemical & fertilizer applications; laws, regulations and basic principles of agricultural chemical & fertilizer application, common agricultural chemicals & fertilizers used in turf and landscape areas, aquatic pesticide applications; environmental conditions appropriate for pesticide applications; and basic mathematical skills necessary to calculate pesticide applications, including, but not limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions to calibrate spray equipment and to estimate material needed for pesticide application.

ABILITY TO: Plan, organize, train, schedule, direct and evaluate the work of others; work independently in performing the maintenance and repair of District parks and facilities; organize and plan programs for operation and maintenance of District parks and facilities; estimate labor and materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; follow oral and written directions and schedules; do basic mathematics; read, write and speak English at a level to satisfactorily perform the work and prepare reports such as inspection and incident forms.

  • Ability to make frequent decision-making and concentration; frequent public and coworker contact; occasional working alone.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to work on weekend, evenings and holidays, to work outdoors in all types of weather and to work at various locations throughout the District.
  • Candidate is required to take and pass a drug screening.
