Job Grade: 4 with MLS ($23.60 - $33.00), 5 without MLS ($20.50 - $28.70)

Reports To: Assistant Director of Branch and Extension Services
SUMMARY
The Head of Extension services oversees the effective and efficient operation of the Department and directly supervises the staff therein. If the incumbent possesses an MLS (or equivalent), he or she also serves as a librarian in his/her area of expertise or as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
• Associate degree from an accredited school plus ten (10) years (public preferred) library experience, OR
• Bachelor degree from an accredited school plus three (3) years (public preferred) library experience
• Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited school preferred.
• Appropriate Indiana Certification for Public Library Professionals, or will obtain certification within six (6) months of hire
• Minimum of three (3) years (public preferred) library experience
• Minimum of one (1) year (public preferred) library supervisory experience
• If applicable, must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record per the established guidelines of the Library’s insurer
• If applicable and driving own car during paid work time, a certificate of coverage or insurability from personal auto insurer must be provided
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

• Ability to deal tactfully and courteously in person and on the telephone with people of all ages in a business and public service context, and with professional colleagues
• If incumbent possesses an MLS (or equivalent): a thorough knowledge of modern library systems, materials, services, programs and equipment, along with selection, acquisition and classifications of collections, and the ability to apply that knowledge
• Ability to conduct an effective reference interview, provide ready-reference assistance and readers’ advisory services in all formats and utilize reference materials to assist patrons
• Broad knowledge in general subject areas as well as knowledge of authors, books, reader interests, reading levels and other media
• Above-average computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software in a Windows environment, along with intermediate Internet research capabilities
• Basic mathematical skills
• Ability to recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to follow written and verbal instructions
• Dependable and able to quickly exercise sound judgment during emergencies
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to pass a drug and alcohol test as requested or required
LANGUAGE SKILL
• Excellent written and oral language and communication skills. Conversational Spanish preferred.
• Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and business correspondence, along with general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and/or governmental regulations
• Ability to effectively write reports, business correspondence and procedural manuals
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Library personnel and the general public in one-on-one and group situations
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Ability to speak, hear and see
• Ability to sit or stand for an extended length of time
• Ability to occasionally reach with hands and arms
• Ability to occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crawl
• Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Directly supervises all departmental personnel
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Elkhart Public Library’s policies and applicable laws, including planning and assigning work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems
