Global Communities is seeking a Social Media Specialist to join the Communications and Public Affairs team at the headquarters in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.

 

The Social Media Specialist is responsible for leading the ongoing development and management of Global Communities’ social media presence, including working with Senior Director to define strategy, create and post new content, review analytics and make recommendations for improvement and growth. Assists in writing content for internal and external audiences including success stories and fact sheets.

Responsibilities

Manages Global Communities social media presence:

  • Develops and implements overall social media strategy and manages the organization’s social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Instagram).
  • Monitors social media presence of field offices. Provides guidance and best practices on social media use. Develops organization-wide policies for social media use to ensure consistency of message and security.
  • Analyzes social media performance metrics and measures social media growth in conjunction with overall Communications goals. Tracks new social media trends and makes recommendations for growing Global Communities’ social media reach and engagement, including thoughtfully curating our feeds with visuals, video, and copy that will resonate with our audiences, creating content calendars, writing social copy, editing & repurposing our long form content for social, and publishing across feeds.
  • Develops annual online content marketing plan, solicits and refines content from field offices and program teams, and shares stories with donors, partners and other key stakeholders to broaden their reach.
  • Develops and publishes content across all social media platforms. Posts meaningful, timely and relevant content. Engages with community of social media followers and responds to comments and messages as appropriate.
  • Engages with partners, donors and other relevant stakeholders via social media on shared program activities and initiatives. Builds relationships with key donors to ensure approval of content, that they also share our content, and that we are meeting project and branding/marketing requirements.
  • Represents Global Communities in social media and digital communications working groups and conferences.
  • Researches and initiates participation on new digital mediums and social media platforms for sharing program successes.

Works with Communications staff to build capacity for all of Global Communities: 

  • Provides technical guidance and training to field offices in communications and social media best practices, including identifying key audiences, developing work plans and recommendations on promotional material development and dissemination.
  • Finds and disseminates resources for communications staff in the field and headquarters on relevant international development communications topics. Designs and develops tools and training materials to help communications staff more effectively tell the Global Communities story.

Travels to field programs to give direct training to communications staff in best practices of all elements of integrated digital communication.

 

Works in coordination with other Communications Specialists on written storytelling and content generation for internal and external outlets:

  • In coordination with the Communications Manager, edits and writes success stories from the field, with a focus on factsheets, success stories and website content. Proofreads and edits communications materials.
  • Coordinates with senior management, technical units, business development teams and field offices in the writing/editing of communications including web articles, fact sheets, brochures, newsletters, success stories, program reports, opinion pieces, blogs, presentations and other outreach materials.
  • Assists in organizing and drafting copy of Global Communities publications.

May travel to areas of varying economic, social and political stability as needed to develop stories and material (up to one trip annually).

 

Serves as a backup to Visual Communications Manager as needed:

  • Posts articles and materials to organization website and intranet.
  • Formats some visual pieces using Microsoft Word or Adobe InDesign.
  • Is familiar with the visual brand guidelines of the organization.

Undertakes all other duties and projects as may be assigned from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of industry practices and standards.
  • Excellent oral, written and graphic communication skills, with ability to proofread copy for accurate style and grammatical usage.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Must be able to multitask and balance a large variety of tasks while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven ability to write compelling copy for publications.
  • Proven ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with graphic and web design software products and software.
  • Proven ability in social media tools and analytics, particularly for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal. Abilities in a second language preferred.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and ability to sit at a computer and operate a keyboard.
  • Authentic grasp of social media; expertise regarding the particular trends, conversations, behaviors, and faux pas endemic to each major platform.
  • Project management and/or social editorial calendar management experience.
  • Exceptional eye for design.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, and a minimum of 5 years of related communications and social media experience; or Master’s degree and 2-5 years of stated experience.
  • Familiarity with international development, humanitarian relief and international trade issues needed.
  • Experience preferred in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro, Acrobat, Dreamweaver); HMTL and CSS; Drupal; FileZilla; Microsoft Word and PowerPoint; social media platforms.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have U.S. work authorization.
