Responsibilities Include: The Analytical Laboratory at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for a position as an Analytical Laboratory Chemist. The INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy Directorate and provides much of the research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. The Analytical Laboratory (AL) is uniquely connected to a range of nuclear research activities throughout the INL, the nation, and the world. As an Analytical Chemist in the AL, you will interact with a team of highly motivated scientists working every day to accomplish the INL’s mission of securing our energy future through the characterization of nuclear fuels using world-class instrumentation and techniques. Functions - Work independently as a technical specialist while performing sample preparation, operation of liquid scintillation analyzers, and extraction chromatography techniques - Operate gamma-ray counting equipment and sample changers associated with gamma-ray detectors - Operate alpha/beta proportional counters, alpha/beta solid-state detectors, and solid-state alpha spectroscopy detectors. - Calibrate and performance test germanium detectors and gas flow proportional counter - Process and interpret counting data collected - Assist in maintaining the AL’s high quality of results on the agreed upon schedules - Assist in the development and expansion of the AL’s capabilities to maintain the status of the AL as a world-class laboratory - Develop new methods and techniques for performing chemical analysis - May mentor and train analysts - Prepare technical products, reports, documents, presentations, and publications Minimum Requirements: - PR2/3: Master’s degree or higher in chemistry, physics, or related field and 1-3 years’ relevant experience. Relevant experience includes in academia, private industry or nuclear. - Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a L clearance. Candidates must possess the following - Demonstrated ability to design and lead independent research projects - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Facilitate teamwork and camaraderie throughout the Laboratory - Communicate effectively with AL Management and Technical Leadership - Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a diverse team environment Preferred Requirements: - Prepare radiological samples in Analytical Laboratory hot cells, gloveboxes or radiological fume hoods.
