Academic Adviser II for Genetics and Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Majors
The departments of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology (GDCB), Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology (EEOB) and Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB) at Iowa State University are seeking qualified candidates for an Academic Adviser II. This position will coordinate with and work in conjunction with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) to serve as an Academic Adviser for undergraduate programs in the life sciences. Primary responsibility will be to serve the over 200 students annually seeking to complete a major or minor in Genetics and Bioinformatics and/or Computational Biology (BCBio). This position will also provide back-up advising and support for other majors in the life sciences.
Responsibilities:
Academic Adviser for Genetics and BCBio students. Serving as academic adviser for first semester and back-up adviser for upper class majors, and providing recommendation letters for students. Work with the Director of Biology and Genetics to assign and train faculty advisers, manage degree audits, approve programs of study, develop course catalogs, maintain student and alumni records, and manage scholarships and websites. Serve as recruitment and orientation coordinator for the Genetic and BCBio Majors, develop recruitment materials, meet with potential students/families, and coordinate activities with College recruitment teams. Instruct Genetics Orientation in the fall (Gen 110) and spring (Gen 112) semesters, design the curriculum, recruit other instructors/speakers, as well as teach and grade the classes. Coordinate Genetics learning community including scheduling course sections, securing funding, hiring/training/supervising peer mentors and coordinating learning community events.
The successful candidate should have broad knowledge of life sciences coursework and research areas and be able to work independently and in collaboration with faculty and student services of the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Agriculture and Life Sciences. Familiarity with campus resources and universities policies will be required. Previous experience in assisting undergraduates with academic and personal issues is preferred. This position will use independent judgment, initiative, and require the ability to complete a variety of job duties with competing priorities.
