What does an Lead Brewer do at companies like MONDAY NIGHT BREWING?

We are seeking an experienced Lead Brewer to take responsibility for all production-related aspects of our new IPA-focused brewpub, Monday Night Brewing - Social Club, based in Birmingham, AL, planned to open in the spring of 2020. This position reports directly to the Brewmaster and VP of Operations.

High-Level Goals

  • Responsible for all brewing operations at Monday Night’s new Birmingham brewpub
  • Collaborate with Brewmaster to develop and brew new recipes in line with Monday Night’s quality standards
  • Work with brewpub management to provide beer training to staff

Responsibilities

  • Be a one person army that oversees all aspects of brewing, production management and maintenance
  • Achieve annual production, capital and quality targets for Birmingham location
  • Assist in planning monthly schedules by coordinating beer production and packaging
  • Be able to effectively troubleshoot all production issues
  • Work with Brewmaster to develop, maintain and execute SOP’s for all tasks related to beer production
  • Keep accurate daily production records per company and governmental requirements
  • Continually maintain all beer production areas and equipment, including assisting maintenance technicians with equipment maintenance and repairs as needed
  • Establish and follow daily and weekly cleaning tasks and schedules
  • Attend department and company-wide meetings
  • Monitor fermentations and ensure they meet target specifications
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by Brewmaster or VP of Operations
  • Collaborate with Brewmaster on new recipe, process and ingredient development
  • Observe exceptionally high safety standards with chemicals, equipment and hazards
  • Brew recipes for “The Social Club” on an Alpha Laval 5-bbl brewhouse and oversee all cellaring/packaging processes for these beers
  • Handle all cellaring tasks and management, including measurements, dry hopping, filtering, racking, dosing, kegging, etc.
  • Maintain exceptionally clean equipment in working order, including tanks, hoses, fittings, tools, barrels, etc.
  • Oversee all aspects of packaging Social Club beers (keg only for now)
  • Conduct sensory and beer trainings for Monday Night staff as needed

Qualifications

  • 3 years minimum professional brewing experience, including at least 2 years of unique recipe formulation and hop forward beer production
  • Curious. Motivated. Enjoys solving problems. Smart.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in collaboration with others
  • Highly organized, motivated and self-directed
  • Exception communication skills
  • Excellent sensory analysis skills
  • Strong mechanical acumen with the ability to fix production equipment when needed
  • Strong understanding of all aspects of hop forward beer production
  • Brewing, winemaking, food science / microbiology or similar degree preferred
  • Working knowledge of chemistry and biology as it pertains to brewing science
  • Demonstrated ability to generate innovative and quality hop-forward beer recipes
  • Knowledge of current trends within the modern craft beer environment including but not limited to recent innovations in production processes/new materials and trends of the craft beer drinking public
  • Familiarity with maintenance, repair and utilization of brewery equipment
  • Strong understanding of chemicals, gases, pressures and temperatures as related to cellar operations
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Drive platform. Ekos experience is a bonus, either way must be able to use and learn various computer programs
  • Must be familiar with the equipment and techniques of properly filling, emptying, repairing, and maintaining oak vessels of varying sizes
  • Experience with sensory and blending with proven success
  • Strong creative endeavor and proven ability to "think outside the box"

Compensation

Salaried, competitive based on experience
