 Job Title: Meteorology/Environmental Science Instructor

Department: Science & Math

Reports To: Academic Chair

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $62,687.00- $65,019.00

SUMMARY 

This instructor will be required to perform all course development and teaching duties expected of current instructors at NMC. This faculty member will be responsible for teaching Earth Science and Meteorology & Climatology courses.  In addition to instructional duties, the instructor will be expected to perform other tasks such as academic advising and giving talks to community organizations. Experience in developing and teaching courses using alternative delivery formats is desirable. This faculty member is a member of the professional teaching staff that is responsible for effectively implementing the mission of NMC and the Science/Math and Technical academic areas.  Responsibilities may include teaching nights, weekends, and/or online instruction. 

All Faculty positions commensurate with degree and experience as outlined in the NMC Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS AND SKILLS 

Required:

  • Minimum of Master's degree (M.S. or M.A.) (18 graduate credits in Meteorology/Environmental Science)
  • Computer skills including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, presentation software.  
  • Attention to detail and good analytical skills. 
  • A clear understanding of sound research methodology. 
  • The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and constituents of varying technical backgrounds.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to develop rapport quickly, speak and listen effectively, and the ability to give succinct instructions.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Meteorology, Environmental Science or related field
  • Two years of industry experience
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience at the community college level as an instructor and/or student

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Planning:

  • Participates in Discipline and Department curriculum development activities.
  • Develops and distributes course syllabi for each course taught to each student which:
  • conveys the goals and outcomes of the course,
  • reflects curriculum adopted by the discipline for said course,
  • establishes and communicates challenging expectations for students,
  • explains the relationship of those expectations to the grading and assessment process.
  • Plans thoroughly on a daily, weekly, and term basis to ensure implementation of the established curriculum and provides strong support for students in their pursuit of established expectations.
  • Develops plans which promote the development of higher-order thinking skills in the instructional process.
  • Develops and maintains course outlines which are reviewed annually.

  • Advises students on curriculum, academic programs, employment and career goals, and other matters, as appropriate.

  • Consistently meets classes and other assignments and commitments in support of the college.
  • Establishes and maintains regular and appropriate office hours of no less than 5 hours per week.
  • Treats all members of the college community with human dignity and respect.
  • Works constructively and through established channels to resolve problems.
  • Participates in activities designed to promote attainment of the college vision and its missions.
  • Participates in discipline planning and improvement activities as requested.
  • Meets requirements of the Faculty Evaluation Plan Guidelines in a timely manner and with the intention of maintaining teaching effectiveness, professional development and support of college/community initiatives.
  • Attends Commencement.
  • Attends and participates in discipline and department meetings.
  • Formally documents learning assessment efforts in a timely manner.

Maintenance of classrooms and lab space

In conjunction with the Environmental Science Department Chair, the individual will be expected to 

  • participate in a 4-day field trip to the Elliot Lake region in Ontario, Canada in the spring

Within 3 years:
Attend one-week Train-the-Trainer class for STCW competencies

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Master's degree (M.S. or M.A.) in Meteorology, Geography, Earth Science, or Environmental Science



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Supervises others in accordance with NMC's policies and applicable laws. Directly supervises 1 lab assistant.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems or gaps.

 

 

WORK HOURS:

This is a full-time, two teaching semester position. This position may require evenings, weekends, on-campus and/or Zoom instruction.
