This position in the Nursing Department will provide instruction in mental health nursing, clinical nursing, medical-surgical nursing and will be responsible for working in conjunction with the Health Occupations Academic Area toward the development and instruction of Nursing and related Allied Health courses.  The instructor will develop and revise courses and course materials as needed. This individual will also assume responsibility for mentoring adjunct faculty. This faculty member is a member of the professional teaching staff that is responsible for effectively implementing the mission of NMC.  Responsibilities may include teaching face-to-face on campus, days, nights, weekends, and/or online or Zoom instruction.

All Faculty positions commensurate with degree and experience as outlined in the NMC Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.



  • Master's degree (M.S.N.) with a major in Nursing, and a focus in Mental Health, Community Health or certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum - two years’ clinical experience with a focus in Mental Health Nursing
  • Minimum of three years’ clinical experience in Medical-Surgical Nursing
  • Teaching/training experience with clients, nurses, other health care professionals, and/or students
  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Michigan or ability to obtain a license before the final hire date
  • BLS Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Computer skills, including knowledge and recent experience using calendaring software, Microsoft Word, and (Google Suite-specifically preferred.) 


  • Doctorate degree related to nursing
  • Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing with recent experience
  • In-patient or outpatient mental health clinical experience
  • Teaching experience in a school/college of nursing 
  • Leadership experience in nursing (i.e. teaching clinical, charge nurse, unit manager, etc.)
  • Gerontology experience
  • Experience in the instruction of web-based, online, and other nontraditional courses
  • American Heart Association BLS Instructor 



Supervise adjunct faculty.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing concerns and resolving problems.



Provide classroom and clinical instruction to students and develop theory and clinical nursing classes, including online and/or Flexible Learning Option courses

    • Teaches course work in the classroom, online, or other Flexible Learning Option.
    • Provides clinical instruction, supervision, and evaluation for students assigned for lab and clinical experiences.
    • Participates in curriculum and course development, revision, and evaluation.
    • Employs a range of suitable strategies to foster student learning and assessment of the same.
    • Stimulates class discussions and other active learning activities. 
    • Promotes student demonstration of learning through a variety of assessments that may include exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings. 
    • Compiles administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities as needed.
    • Demonstrates an interest in using current and emerging technologies in the classroom.
    • Schedules posted office hours as required by NMC policy in order to facilitate student access.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

Serve as Lead Instructor by planning, coordinating, and supervising clinical co-requisite course sections of assigned theory courses:

  • Arrange and schedule student clinical placements. 
  • Write, update, and distribute course syllabus, course calendar, and clinical schedules.
  • Orient clinical instructors to course expectations, evaluation methods, etc.
  • Guide and supervise clinical instructors’ evaluations of students.
  • Provide feedback on clinical faculty performance; summarizing findings and directing any concerns to the Director of Nursing according to NMC policy.
  • Record and submit course grades.  Notifying the Director of Nursing of any students who fail, drop, or withdraw from the course.
  • Evaluate course outcomes and content and recommend changes to the Director of Nursing.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with clinical site managers and staff in order to promote and maintain an atmosphere conducive to educative harmony, continued goodwill, and effective communication.
  • Resolve conflicts that may arise between individuals (staff, students, etc.).
  • Investigate the events surrounding incidents that require documentation and/or reports, etc.
  • Review and/or formulate documentation relevant to student probation and remediation in conjunction with clinical instructors.
  • Familiarize adjunct faculty with NMC policy and procedures in conjunction with the Director of Nursing.
  • Ensure continuity between lecture content and student clinical assignments.
  • Teach any required seminars and lab components in conjunction with clinical instructors, etc.
