The Academic and Career Resource Advisor is responsible for providing student-centered and holistic academic and career advising, guidance and mentorship, and for fostering student and career development. Works to support university initiatives and strategic goals, drives measurable student outcomes, and works to improve retention by engaging in success advising techniques with assigned caseload. In addition, serves as a SUCCESS Coach as part of a web of supportive relationships around the student. Serves as an integral player among campus-wide support offices. Executes proactive strategies to support overall student and career success.
  • Provides comprehensive academic advising and career planning services to students by utilizing a holistic and success-minded approach. Works to build relationships and connections with students through a mission-driven and student-centered approach.
  • Manages an advising caseload of undecided and pre-clinical nursing students and also provides initial advising to incoming first year students and transfer students, as needed. 
  • Assists students with major and career exploration and development, academic and career planning assessments, and collaborates with students to develop educational plans that support student success. 
  • Works with various software tools, including Student Planning, Handshake, Retention Alert, Canvas, and Colleague, etc., and ensures appropriate and timely documentation of student interactions. Provides proactive follow up and outreach with students throughout the school year.
  • Provides SUCCESS Coaching for an assigned population of students throughout their academic career, which may or may not overlap with advising caseload. Cultivates and maintains relationships with students; collaborates with students and their support team to provide connection, mentorship, support, and individualized success plans that include major and career goals, service learning, and impactful experiences, such as leadership, study abroad, internships, and research opportunities.
  • Participates in and assists with the coordination of departmental programs that support student development and retention initiatives, to include the College-to-Career Expo, workshops, networking and leadership events, etc. 
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to facilitate student success, retention, and persistence and serves on university committees and task forces as required.
  • Participates in a wide variety of University events and retention initiatives, to include new student orientation (VIA), transfer student orientations (TSO), Transfer Days, commencement, etc. Provides presentations across the University to support advising and career development initiatives and other retention systems.   
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred; Field of study in Education, Counseling, Social Work or related area.
  • 1-3 years of experience in academic advising at a college level or related experience. 1-3 years academic coaching with students who struggle academically.
  • Experience with career development advising helpful. 
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral are mandatory.
  • Knowledge of degree requirements and best practice in Student Development Theory. Experience working with at-risk students. Writing background an asset.
  • Experience managing an academic support program would be an asset.
