Reporting to the Director of Campus Life, the Assistant Director works to develop and deliver programs, training and advocacy for student activities, leadership and new student orientation.   The Assistant Director will champion student involvement and engage students by focusing on holistic student development and fostering spaces where student identities are affirmed and supported. As a member of the Student Life team, the Assistant Director is a live-on position that will be expected to work daytime and non-traditional hours including some nights and weekends, as well as serve in an on-call rotation to support resident students. The Assistant Director will have excellent leadership training skills, providing staff and students with regular training and educational opportunities and will be able to work collaboratively with academic departments, administrators and faculty members.
  • Coordinate and staff student involvement opportunities, campus traditions, annual events, and coordinate all logistics and programming for New Student Orientation Programs, Orientation Leader Selection & Training, and Cougar Trax.
  • Manage and advise all registered student organization to include organization finances, involvement/information fairs, professional development series, GivePulse, and The Den (Anthology, Engage software) and campus visit days.
  • Serve as advisor to Student Activities Board (SAB), while managing the hiring, training and supervision of student leaders to SAB and Student Government Association (SGA).
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise the Graduate Assistant for Student Activities.
  • Assist the Director of Campus Life in staffing and managing the resources and operations of the Student Organization Center (SOC) including the supervision of student workers.  
  • Collaboratively design, plan, facilitate and assess diversity and inclusion student-focused trainings, workshops, seminars, multi-racial and affinity group dialogues and education-centered activities and committees including but not limited to Safe Zone trainings and the “SXU Speaks” intercultural dialogue initiative. 
  • Function as a member of the Student Life Staff by assisting the Dean of Students in providing resources, referrals, mentorship, crisis intervention, educational prevention programming, student conduct process, and general guidance as appropriate. 
  • Serve in an evening and weekend duty rotation system over 10-months. While on call, serve as a resource to University Housing Staff and Public Safety including assistance in various crisis situations. The SLP on Call is expected to remain on campus or be within 15 minutes of campus. The SLP on Call will carry a duty mobile phone and respond to all calls. 
  • Support initiatives related to serving Saint Xavier University’s identity as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

  • Support Saint Xavier University's mission and Catholic, Mercy identity, and Core Values (Respect, Excellence, Diversity, Compassion, Hospitality, Integrity, Learning for Life, Service)
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude from assigning work that logically relates to the position.
  • May teach a section of Transitions, Saint Xavier’s one-credit course required of all first-year students.
  • 2 years of full-time experience with event planning, student activities, equity, and inclusion programs, graduate assistant work is considered. 
  • Programmatic and supervisory experience and demonstrated student organizational leadership experience preferred. 
  • Knowledge of human and student development, group dynamics, personal computer proficiency, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills preferred.
  • Passion for thinking boldly about addressing and working to dismantle systemic racial injustices as well as intersecting systems of oppression with a commitment to serving diverse student populations.
  • Previous experience with web-based club/organizations software programs (i.e., Involvio, Engage/Campus Labs, 25 Live Scheduling, etc.) preferred. 
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred. 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for programming elements of the position and on-call needs.
  • This is a live-in position; compensation includes a furnished apartment, Internet, laundry (in building).  A pet is permitted with signed agreement.
  • Description of Hours: MON-FRI 8:30am-4:30pm, some nights & weekends/on call
