Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Verana Health is seeking a Clinical Data Normalization Lead who will manage a team of Clinical Data Normalization Analysts responsible for normalizing healthcare data from a variety of electronic health records (EHR) and practice management system sources.  This position will have the opportunity to lead and help set the direction for a fast-growing team within the data ingestion operation.  The ideal candidate must thoroughly enjoy working daily with the intricacies and nuances of healthcare data and will have the opportunity to analyze a wide variety of new datasets and healthcare data models to expand their own knowledge and understanding.  In addition, they will have the ability to apply strong critical thinking skills to lead a team in developing successful, repeatable, and scalable processes, capable of correctly analyzing future datasets.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead a team of Clinical Data Normalization Analysts by providing guidance on where data elements reside within EHR and practice management databases and how they should be normalized and transformed to a common data model capable of supporting a broad range of end use cases in quality improvement, analytics, real-world evidence studies, and clinical trials
  • Develop standard operating procedures and documentation for how to identify, implement, and maintain mappings from original source data systems to a common model 
  • Profile EHR and practice management systems to build a sustainable knowledge repository to drive ETL efforts in a scalable manner
  • Provide feedback to the development of a common data model that balances inputs from multiple sources, including various EHR schemas, healthcare data models, and internal customer requirements
  • Ensure data elements are being normalized to industry standard specifications based on knowledge of healthcare-specific data models for interoperability and analytics, data dictionaries, and defined vocabularies
  • Work closely with teams of data engineers and data scientists across the organization to ensure data normalization efforts meet customer requirements according to product milestones and deadlines
  • Serve as part of Verana’s larger product team dedicated to data ingestion

Basic Requirements:

  • 5+ years of deep healthcare data experience across multiple EHR systems
  • 3+ years of management experience of local, remote, and international teams spanning across geographies and time zones
  • Thorough knowledge of the clinical & EHR workflow, including knowledge of expected data elements and categories, and understanding of standard medical terminologies and coding systems (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT)
  • In-depth understanding of the source of truth for various healthcare data elements in the backend databases of EHRs
  • Demonstrated experience in aligning engineering, data science, and product teams toward the delivery of internal data products
  • Professional experience with large healthcare datasets, including the data models of multiple, major EHRs and practice management systems  - particularly in the fields of ophthalmology, neurology, and urology
  • Familiarity with health interoperability standard information models
  • Experience developing new processes in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of logical and physical data modeling, including how to correctly determine and implement keys required for updating and de-duplicating records
  • Ability to design complex and scalable ETL processes
  • Highly proficient in SQL

  • Experience using Jira project tracking software and Confluence for the management of work streams and product documentation
  • Python and Spark programming skills
  • Experience working in an AWS Cloud environment
  • Knowledge of MIPS (Merit-based Incentive Payment System) and other regulatory (FDA, ONC, CDC) and payer (CMS) reporting requirements
