Overview of Role

The Lead Gallery Officer provides a safe and secure environment for all visitors and staff, as well as the art collection, by monitoring the activities in the museum. The Lead Gallery Officer will report hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing, disorderly conduct, etc., maintain order, and enforce the policies and procedures of the Walters Art Museum. The Lead Gallery Officer will oversee the opening and closing procedures to ensure the museum is secure and will assist with the scheduling and training of Gallery Officers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the art collection, the building structure and floorplans, and the museum’s policies and procedures.
  • Uphold the Museum’s Visitor Promise by ensuring that the Museum is safe, welcoming, and accessible, through work that includes but is not limited to the following activities:
    • Conducting rounds throughout the museum, monitoring the activity of visitors and staff to ensure compliance with its policies and to ensure a safe and secure environment in accordance with the Visitor Promise;
    • Checking for fire and safety hazards, vandalism, suspicious activity, and improper behavior;
    • Reporting all incidents to the security supervisor, and
    • Responding to safety and security threats and hazardous situations as directed.
  • Ensure the museum is prepared to safely open to the public and ensure the museum is secured each day when closing to the public by:
    • Writing daily post assignments and informing Gallery Officers about events and changes in procedures;
    • Assisting with training Gallery Officers to ensure that they are knowledgeable about museum policies and procedures;
    • Supporting officers in their daily assignments;
    • Providing coverage for officers’ reliefs and breaks;
    • Ensuring Gallery Officers have the necessary documents and equipment to complete their job;
    • Ensuring the Gallery Officers return their equipment at the end of each shift, and
    • Conducting rounds and daily post inspections.
  • Inspect the art at various times during the shift and report any unusual circumstances. Maintain a positive work relationship with Conservation, Registrars, and Collections Technicians to ensure the safekeeping of the art. Complete TSA certification.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all security equipment to ensure the Gallery Officers have working equipment and that all equipment is accounted for.
  • Ensure that the Gallery Officers have adequate uniforms and place orders for additional uniforms as needed.
  • Ensure that the museum is free from danger, risk, or otherwise hazardous situations. Respond to emergencies that occur to provide guidance and support by:
    • Completing Incident Commander training and assuming the role of Incident Commander during an emergency;
    • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the museum’s Emergency Operations Plan and completing training for various emergencies, such as evacuations, missing persons, active shooters, etc.;
    • Completing First Aid/CPR/AED training;
    • Obtaining information about an active incident, providing assistance, and determining the best course of action based on the situation, known facts, and the established policies and procedures;
    • Placing emergency calls as needed to fire, police, and other emergency agencies;
    • Reporting all security, safety, and environmental issues immediately to the Gallery Supervisor and/or the Director of Safety and Security, and
    • Ensuring incident reports are conducted and completed as necessary by the end of the shift.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the policies and procedures regarding service animals, unattended children, and armed visitors (law enforcement) and ensure that all support equipment (elevators, lifts, etc.) are working properly.
  • Learn the Walters art collection and the layout of the buildings, including the location of specific galleries.
  • Work special events as needed; monitor the event activities and enforce the Special Events policy when necessary.
  • Assist the Gallery Supervisor with writing schedules and reviewing leave requests.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Gallery Officers and assist the Gallery Supervisor with resolving personnel and performance issues.
  • Perform administrative duties, such as sending and responding to emails, copying and scanning documents, and submitting attendance for contract officers.
  • Cross-train in the Monitor Room and assist with Monitor Room coverage as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Job Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week; Wednesday-Sunday, or as required by circumstances and special events). The Lead Gallery Officer’s weekly schedule is Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:15am to 5:15pm and Thursday 12:15pm to 8:15pm. Must be flexible to work overtime as essential personnel. Essential personnel remain on duty and on site until properly relieved.

Hourly Rate: $19.00/hour

All employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The museum does not sponsor work visas.

Qualifications


  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of previous experience in the security field; experience in a Museum setting preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the security principles, practices, and procedures.
  • First Aid/AED/CPR certifications.
  • Experience with monitoring and controlling alarm systems, CCTV, and 2-way radio communications and other communication systems.
  • Background in preparing incident reports and experience using computers and standard office programs or software, as well as the ability to document details in a clear and concise manner.
  • Able to multitask, properly assess and respond to emergencies, and take appropriate actions while performing under pressure.
  • Must be a team player and able to communicate effectively with visitors and staff at all levels, as well as with representatives from outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
