POSITION DESCRIPTION

Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library seeks a skilled and team-oriented Store Manager who provides visitors with an outstanding experience and the highest level of customer service. Working as part of an energetic and collaborative team, the Store Manager contributes to Winterthur’s mission to “build upon the vision of Henry Francis du Pont to inspire and educate through its collections, estate, and academic programs by engaging diverse audiences in the study, preservation, and interpretation of American material culture, art, design, and history.”

Winterthur is looking to expand its mission and visitor experience by reimaging its Museum Store. The museum’s retail program currently includes an on-site and e-commerce site.

We seek a dynamic and experienced Manager to curate and build a selection of merchandise that feels distinct and successfully translates Winterthur’s mission, values, voice, and visual identity in product offerings, packaging, and POS. In addition, the Store Manager will supervise and lead an Assistant Manager and team of Sales Associates in a proactive and welcoming approach to sharing Winterthur with our guests.

This role will be accountable for meeting financial targets for sales, establishing the budget, and merchandising a 1,000 sq. ft. space. The Store Manager will perform inventory management, product display, analysis of weekly finances, and data reporting.

The Store Manager has an unprecedented opportunity to work directly with artists and designers to produce exclusive limited editions and to stock new products that expand Winterthur’s mission. A goal of the retail program is to expand the Winterthur experience for visitors on-site and online by connecting and collaborating with educators, interpreters, curators, gardens team, events, marketing and technology, and exhibition staff. The Store Manager will curate and select an engaging and eclectic selection of scholarly and popular books and objects that will make the Museum Store as vibrant a destination as the institution itself.

Responsibilities

  1. Manage all aspects of the daily operations of the on-site Museum Store and e-commerce site to generate maximum profitability
  2. Set and realize annual sales goals and create strategies to increase Museum Store sales
  3. Strategically design merchandising displays to achieve sales objectives
  4. Develop strategies to meet sales and purchasing goals while maintaining appropriate sales, margin, and budget.
  5. Research new products and develop merchandise lines that reflect Winterthur’s mission.
  6. Stay abreast of current business trends across both the cultural and commercial sectors through own knowledge, networking, attendance at relevant trade shows, and understanding area Museum Store products
  7. Oversee Museum Store maintenance, product shipping and receiving
  8. Maintain accurate inventory and sales records through POS system
  9. Hire and supervise store staff to master the POS system, understand policies and procedures, provide excellent customer service, and utilize active-selling techniques
  10. Manage Store recordkeeping, including bank deposits, accounts payable, budgeting, and sales tax
  11. Assist customers with product selections and process all customer orders and returns
  12. Manage inventory receiving, tagging or ticketing, and merchandising on the sales floor
  13. Proactively attain product knowledge and be able to share that with co-workers and customers
  14. Work with the Marketing Division to develop an online presence and strong e-commerce site
  15. Work with the Finance Department to ensure communication of cash flow, sales, and timely monthly reports
  16. Promote teamwork by working with other staff effectively, safely, respectfully, and efficiently
  17. Other related duties may be assigned as needed

Compensation: $50,000–$54,000, commensurate with experience

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Experience: 3+ years retail management experience, BA/BS—equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree

Preferred Experience: 3+ years retail management experience in a museum store setting

Knowledge/Skills:

  1. Computer competency in Microsoft Office required; and ability to learn new software quickly, including the ability to run, understand, and analyze computer reports
  2. Considerable knowledge of visual merchandising and POS systems
  3. Ability to analyze merchandise flow and make decisions that will resolve inventory discrepancies
  4. Ability to correctly analyze and understand sales reports
  5. High degree of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail
  6. Ability to effectively plan, schedule, organize and provide instructions for the work of other.
  7. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  8. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  9. Ability to accurately handle money
  10. Strong, proven experience in retail sales and customer service
  11. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work well with people at all levels and of different cultures
  12. Maturity to accommodate frequently shifting priorities calmly and professionally
  13. E-commerce and/or social media experience a plus
  14. Dependable with a strong work ethic; respects and meets deadlines
  15. Ability to represent Winterthur professionally and consistently demonstrate the institution’s values
  16. Minimal travel may be required

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to be bonded, if necessary
  2. Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds, move about quickly, and stand for extended periods
  3. Ability to acquire and maintain a valid driver’s license

Schedule:

  • Full-time position (Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday). Holiday, weekend, and evening availability is a must.
