Job Description


What your new role will entail;

AECOM is looking for a Consultant Ecologist to join our established UK&I Ecology team. This role will include a combination of field, office and home working (hybrid based) and be located at one of UK offices in Cardiff, Leeds, Newcastle, Birmingham or Nottingham though other locations would be considered. Depending on your interests and skillset, you will have opportunities to support on a variety of areas such as: using innovative techniques for species and habitats surveys, data capture and reporting; work winning; Advanced Bat Licence Survey Techniques; and Biodiversity Net Gain mentoring and coaching of the team. As a Consultant Ecologist the role will require you to:

  • Participate in the health, safety and well-being culture of the team;
  • Support liaison with project managers and clients on the delivery of ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects;
  • Organise and carry out desk studies and field-based habitat, botanical, and protected species surveys;
  • Assisting, as appropriate to grade, with managing the technical and financial performance of ecological projects to meet budgets and deadlines;
  • Support with undertaking the analysis, evaluation, interpretation and presentation of ecological data, including preparing reports and supporting with the design of mitigation strategies;
  • Performing the role of an Ecological Clerk of Works on construction projects;
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with your line manager, other members of the ecology team and clients;
  • Compliance with internal business management procedures, including in relation to health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs including self-check of work; and
  • Undertaking other tasks which add value to the development of the ecology team or support wider environmental business goals, as required.

In all locations you will work on a wide range of projects, notably in the power and renewables, infrastructure, environment and industrial sectors, as well as collaborating with other technical disciplines such as water, landscape, GIS, engineering, and sustainability. Depending on your location will determine which projects you are most involved in.

Presently, our Northern regional Nature teams are working on a new electrical transmission line for National Grid (facilitating the connection of proposed new offshore wind), rail projects including the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), nationally significant blue and green hydrogen production facilities, solar farm projects, in addition to various water and highways projects and potential to travel to assist with North Wales, Scotland and potentially more internationally.

Our South West and South Wales regional Nature team are working on a mix of large infrastructure projects in the water, renewables, defence and transport sectors, alongside managing smaller local projects and European Protected Species licences for bats, dormice, water vole and otter. Our team is also supporting the wider AECOM Nature team with National and International projects, including a solar scheme in North Wales and various projects in Saudi Arabia.


Qualifications


Here’s what we will need from you;

  • Demonstrable experience of working in an ecology-related job role in the public and/or private sector;
  • Knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and ecological survey methodologies;
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution or evidence working towards (such as CIEEM);
  • Field skills with experience in botanical identification including Phase1/ UKHab and/or protected species surveys;
  • A proactive approach to Health and Safety;
  • Professional, organised and thorough approach to work which demonstrates an attention to detail;
  • Adaptable and flexible approach to work to meet peaks in demands (ecology roles typically involve occasional longer/and or unsociable hours and a degree of working away from home for days/ weeks at a time); and
  • Report writing skills, with demonstrable experience in producing a range of reports.
