Senior Researcher - Sensor Development and Data Analysis
Location: Science Creates St Philips, Bristol, UK (On-site full time)
Contract: Full Time (37.5 hours/week), fixed term in the first instance (1 year) with a possibility of converting to permanent role which will be reviewed after 6 months.
Salary:£32,000-38,000 per annum (pro rata)

Carbometrics is a specialist chemistry company based in Bristol, UK. Our core competency is the design, synthesis and derivatisation of highly selective and robust carbohydrate-binding molecules. Our mission is to help people with diabetes to live more normal and longer lives. We are using our proprietary Biomimetic Glucose Binding Molecules (GBM) to develop a new glucose sensor chemistry that will enable market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM).
About The Role
Carbometrics is in an exciting phase of scaling up its efforts to automate the in vitro testing of our glucose sensors using automated experimental control systems and data analysis. The successful candidate will work as part of the scientific team to support the sensor development and testing team. To thrive in this role, the successful candidate will have specific, hands-on, experience with data analysis and coding, be able to work independently and be adaptable to new ideas and change, resourceful and self-motivated.
The role is based within our innovative team in Bristols only dedicated scientific incubator. Job Description
As a Senior Researcher in Sensor Development and Data Analysis, you will be responsible for:
- Designing and conducting sensor experiments involving a custom-built fluidic device with integrated optoelectronics.
- Managing hardware setup including pumps, solutions and control software for experiments.
- Analysing experimental data using Python and presenting findings to the team.
- Debugging and improving existing codebases and producing new analysis scripts when required.
- Routine use of MongoDB databases for data storage and analysis, providing improvements to the existing databases where necessary (e.g., new architecture, improved automation).
- Collaborating closely with a team of engineers and researchers to enhance sensor technologies and experiment methodologies.
What We're Looking For
- Qualification at undergraduate or postgraduate level (Bachelors, Masters, PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related field.
- Hands-on experience in laboratory settings, particularly with fluidics and sensor technologies.
- Strong programming skills in Python and experience with data analysis.
- Ability to work with analysis scripts and software in Windows and Linux.
- Familiarity with MongoDB or similar databases (routine use, automation of data upload and database querying) is highly desirable.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and a keen attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex data in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to prepare chemical formulations would be useful but not essential
