Oxford Sixth Form College are seeking a Deputy Head, an exciting role that would suit someone with pervious experience in Senior Leadership. The Deputy Head will be pivotal in managing and developing the teaching and learning, pastoral support and boarding, whilst ensuring the continuation of an excellent educational programme that provides an outstanding student experience.

As a member of the College’s Senior Leadership Team, the Deputy Head will be expected to be involved in, and make a proactive contribution to all aspects of college life, supporting and where appropriate, representing or deputising for the Principal in all aspects of College leadership. This includes the crucial contributions to the College’s strategic and operational development, identifying and taking every possible opportunity to improve, enhance and further the College’s educational, academic, and super curricular, boarding, and pastoral provision.

More specifically, the Deputy Head will be the College Designated Safeguarding Lead, and as such will have responsibilities with regards to safeguarding and child protection. This will involve College-wide responsibility of:

  • Supporting the wellbeing for our students;
  • Issues relating to behaviour and discipline;
  • Leading the Safeguarding team and liaising with relevant external agencies;
  • Overseeing and contributing to the development of the College’s boarding provision; and
  • Leading on boarding and pastoral regulatory compliance.

Job title Deputy Head

Line Manages: Assistant Principal Academic Administration, Directors of Studies, Director of Student Services and the SENDCO and HR Coordinator

Job Purpose:

The Deputy Head will sit on the College’s Senior Leadership Team and will perform a key role in the management and development of teaching and learning, pastoral support and boarding, ensuring the provision of an excellent educational programme that provides an outstanding student experience.

Main Duties

Leadership and Management

  • In leading by example, provide inspiration and motivation by embodying the ethos and values of the College;
  • Work with the Principal and the other members of the College’s Senior Management Team to be involved in all aspects of College life and leadership, including College improvement and the formulation of a whole College strategy;
  • Lead and promote all Nord Anglia Education initiatives where relevant, and engage the staffing body in NAE University;
  • Undertake all mandatory training as required;
  • Contribute to the regular review and monitoring of the structures, systems and processes which underpin the effective and efficient running of the College;
  • Work with the Principal and other colleagues in the promotion of the College and its benefits to parents, potential students, local feeder institutions and placement consultancies;
  • Ensure compliance with current safeguarding best practice, regulations and guidance;
  • Prepare and deliver reports for Governors, including regular safeguarding reports and the annual safeguarding report for the local authority
  • Working with the Senior and Middle Management Teams to ensure that the College always remains compliant;
  • Manage any and all budgets pertaining to academic and pastoral matters;
  • Have oversight of academic and pastoral data tracking and management, implementing and leading a data driven approach to tracking well-being indicators across all phases of the College;
  • Be responsible for the review processes of key documents e.g. information booklets; staff handbooks, risk assessments, policies and practices, ensuring they are fully compliant with all relevant regulatory requirements, in particular but not limited to, the ISSRs and NMS;
  • Working with the Human Resources Coordinator ensure the timely recruitment of appropriate staff and any discipline concerns within your area of responsibility;
  • Take the lead in ensuring the College is ready for inspection on pastoral and safeguarding issues;
  • Be involved, as required, in interviewing and assessing prospective staff and students;
  • Lead the student disciplinary process, liaising with parents where required;
  • Lead on the performance and development of all staff within your team.

Teaching and Learning

  • Ensure best possible practice in the intersection between pastoral matters and academic provision;
  • Plan and co-ordinate teaching programmes and teaching resources in the most efficient and effective way (particularly with reference to curriculum review, timetabling, assessments and staff deployment) with an understanding of the College’s commercial and academic targets and students’ academic needs; to ensure that processes and systems are in place to track, record and report on students’ progress and attendance;
  • Promote a clear and effective system is in place for learning walks, lesson observations and the appraisal process with a focus on progress and outcomes for students, and teachers’ professional development needs with a view to enhancing quality;
  • Keep abreast of developments in the world of education research and how these can be used to develop our offering at OSFC;
  • Lead the curriculum review and quality assurance process for all academic programmes against agreed content;
  • In conjunction with the Facilities Manager and IT Engineer, support the development of the College’s teaching environment, teaching and learning resources and IT capabilities;
  • Convene, chair and contribute to meetings of those line managed as appropriate;
  • Offer support, guidance and training where appropriate to all staff in matters relating to academic, pastoral care and welfare issues;

Pastoral Care, Student Welfare and Safeguarding

  • To be the College’s Designated Safeguarding Lead and assume all responsibilities as required by legislation;
  • The DSL will work closely with the IT Engineer to provide and maintain a secure College network that has appropriate and accurate filtering and monitoring systems in place;
  • To liaise with the LADO, Social Services Team and other external agencies as appropriate, maintaining meticulous records;
  • Oversee the development of a comprehensive strategy of support and infrastructure for Mental Health and Well-Being across the College for staff and students;
  • Oversee and monitor the operation of CPOMS, the College’s central pastoral recording system;
  • Ensure the College provides a homely and supportive boarding environment that is consistent across the houses and befitting of an independent sixth form College;
  • Ensure that all National Minimum Boarding Standards are met at all times;
  • Ensure that boarding staff have sufficient and appropriate training;
  • To ensure that all matters relating to the general welfare of students, including such personal matters as a student may seek help with, are dealt with discreetly and promptly by those line managed, enlisting the support of other staff and external agencies as judged appropriate;
  • To ensure that pastoral and welfare matters which may adversely affect a student’s academic progress are resolved speedily and effectively or appropriate support provided to the student concerned by relevant staff;
  • To ensure that relevant staff liaise effectively with parents, guardians and agents so that they can be assured that the welfare of students, as well as their academic progress, is monitored and supported by the College, and to seek their support and co-operation, as necessary;
  • In liaison with and or as requested by the Director of Admissions, SENDCo and/or external agency, offering advice and guidance in relation to the ability of the College to meet or not the welfare or health needs of prospective students;
  • To ensure the College has an appropriate and trained Independent Listener, at all times.

Additional Duties

  • To be responsible for and oversee staff development and student inductions;
  • Monitor and develop effective student feedback systems to inform review processes;
  • Working with the Senior Management Team ensure all aspects of attendance monitoring are compliant with ISI, UKVI, and DfE regulations and to ensure effective processes and systems are in place to follow-up on student absence;
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory matters arising from, for example, the DfE, ISI, JCQ and UKVI, and that they are embedded in all academic, pastoral and boarding matters, and represent the College on said matters during an inspection by any regulatory body;
  • Meet with the College Governor (Safeguarding) at least once each term;
  • Provide reports for Governors meetings as and when required;
  • Assist in the management of and participate in student recruitment activities, such as agent familiarisation trips, prospective student/parent visits;
  • Attend relevant professional development courses and external meetings as a representative of the College;
  • To be willing to work flexibly including weekends and evenings for issues of safeguarding;
  • Be part of the evening and weekend on-call duty manager rota;
  • Actively promote and market the College and present a positive image of the college and its activities both within and outside the college environment.

Personal Specification

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Strong academic and intellectual credentials

Knowledge and Experience

  • Excellent record as a teacher and middle or senior leader with evidence of ability to manage staff and whole school strategic priorities
  • Understanding and management of ISAMS
  • Evidence of understanding the commercial realities of leading an international school in a competitive settings
  • Evidence of shaping, developing and managing whole school systems

Skills

  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills, with high levels of digital competency
  • A strategic thinker, with excellent communication skills and a developed ability to prioritise
  • An enthusiasm for and engagement with educational research and reforms, looking at innovative ways of integrating these into our curriculum model
  • Appreciation and understanding of the context of international education, with sensitivity to the diverse needs of international students and their families.
