A Fashion Designer develops the apparel design strategy for an organization. Determines style, material, and color directions based on input from sales/marketing, merchandising, development and manufacturing staff. Being a Fashion Designer keeps abreast of consumer needs and trends, and supports the integrity of the lines/brands and the goals of the company. Produces design sketches and makes seasonal presentations of product designs. Additionally, Fashion Designer reviews all styles for construction, and approves quality of factory samples. Typically requires a bachelor's degree of fashion design or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Fashion Designer gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. To be a Fashion Designer typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience.

This is not a management position, but still requires important skills in order to fully execute the role.  A keen understanding of the following is necessary for the role: Concept Development, Conceptual Design, Design, Design Documentation, Design Management, Experience Design, Lean Startup, Product Design, Product Management Lifecycle (PMLC), Product Planning, Product Requirements, Product Scoping, Product Strategy.  Some of the more basic skills utilized in this role include: CAD Software.  These skills are certainly important to the role, but keep in mind, fit into a company culture and environment is often just as important.
