What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coder position at Cary Medical Center?
Job Summary: Activities include, but are not limited to: coding for inpatient and outpatient services, diagnostic tests and other medical services rendered to each patient, in compliance with federal and state regulations using appropriate classification systems.
Essential Duties:
1. Code patient encounters including surgeries, hospital and nursing home visits, office visits, and pathology as assigned.
2. Codes all medical records averaging within five days of patient visit.
3. Review and correct denied claims as appropriate on a daily basis.
4. Maintains a working knowledge of medical terminology.
5. Consistently gives accurate attention to detail.
6. Attends workshops and in-services when made available.
7. Provides coding process overview to new providers and regularly meets with providers for clarification of coding as necessary.
8. Performs in an independent manner with little or no supervision.
9. Periodically reviews provider’s coding/CPT code assignment as assigned.
10. Reports all malfunctions of equipment to appropriate personnel.
11. Trains all new coders to adhere to standards within the department.
12. Displays courtesy at all times when communicating with physicians, staff members, and the public.
13. Adheres to coding standards as provided by Federal and State regulations.
14. Reports to the Manager on any problems regarding coding.
15. Performs related duties as assigned, or as the situation dictates.
16. Register, code, and charge for Radiology services and/or other providers as identified.
17. Maintain a thorough working knowledge of medical terminology.
Education, Skills, Experience Requirements:
1. A High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Knowledge of current coding classification systems.
3. Medical terminology and anatomy.
4. Employee is encouraged to obtain a coding certification as a RHIA, RHIT or CCS.
5. Completion of any in-hospital training required.
6. Ability to relate professionally with other hospital staff.
7. Ability to organize and prioritize work.
8. Some work-related experience is required.
