What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at Confidential?
Our custom manufacturing company has a job opening for the position of Estimator.
The Estimator is responsible for the cost estimation of products we are contracted to make or are bidding on. This person first typically reviews client-provided documents to gain an understanding of the job requirements. They then collaborate with other in-house departments to determine the best way to make the product. Lastly, they create a roll-up estimate of time, material, and vendor costs. Our project manager uses these costs in our quoting process. Applicants should be familiar with production environments having multiple departments, machinery, and processes. In addition, they should feel comfortable reading various types of user-provided documentation (such as blueprints, shop drawings, napkin sketches, etc.) and should also be familiar with cost-saving and value engineering techniques.
COMPUTER EXPERIENCE: Microsoft Office, Intermediate Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Estimating software
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review client-provided drawing for specific details of a product. This requires working directly with project managers to review RFQ’s, and Bid packages.
- Ability to identify specific features of the item such as materials, fabrication, finishes, graphics, mounting methods etc.
- Submit RFQ’s to vendors for outsourced items, including creating sketches, emails and conducting phone interviews.
- Coordinate with project managers to create RFI’s for missing / unclear details
- Return the costing information to the project manager requesting it.
- Monitor costing schedule to ensure costing tasks are completed on time.
- Conceptualize possible routes for production and material usage.
- Itemize each of the required materials in the product and the amounts being used.
- Itemize required process and labor for steps
- Collaborate with others to improve our costing process, create costing schedules that others can use for simple costing jobs.
- Provide support to engineers beginning to create drawings for in-house production
- Able to apply value engineering and cost-saving techniques as an everyday skill
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Has experience & comprehensive knowledge of job shop fabrication processes such as cutting, milling, drilling, taping, finishing, painting, vinyl graphics, assembly and how these processes can be used in combination or separate to create a finished product.
- Understanding of production workflows
- Ability to visualize hypothetical production workflows for estimated products
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Works well with short timelines and tight deadlines
- Great time management and analytical skills
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Bachelors of Engineering Preferred.
