Senior Designer

Overview

With preliminary direction from a licensed architect, prepare feasibility studies and programming, concept development and document production for competitions, and participate all phases of domestic and international large-scale corporate/commercial, civic, multistory mixed-use, healthcare, science & technology, education, aviation and transportation projects, including new construction, renovation, expansion, tenant improvement, parking garages, and demolition/site preparation; participate in all phases of urban infill development projects, including urban design, mixed-use regeneration, urban revitalization and planning, streetscapes, land use and transportation, and open space planning projects; conduct site reconnaissance, site investigations, and onsite charettes using GIS; prepare design guidelines, capacity studies, concept plans, development plans, entitlement plans, traffic demand management plans, and traffic impact analysis; interpret traffic impact analysis and management plans and analyze as-built plans, photographs, notes, and other input material to determine best approaches for completion of drawings to solve technical issues of design about sites and buildings; research codes and regulations, applying aviation planning principles and processes, and address factors affecting aviation operations and FAA and TSA regulations involved in airport planning and design; recommend procedures and create space organization diagrams indicating functional relationships and appropriate adjacencies within and among the departments of the projects; participate in project team discussions and public meetings to provide recommendations when revisions from government agencies, planning officials, clients, and other stakeholder groups are necessary and translate clients’ functional and spatial requirements for site and structures into conceptual design solutions; produce 2D/3D hand-drawn renderings for design development; prepare presentation sketches, drawings, multimedia and imageboard presentations, architectural detail specifications, building physical models using digital fabrication software for laser cutter and 3D printer, and highly detailed 3D virtual models for presentation packages via building information modeling (BIM) software (Revit), AutoCAD, SketchUp, 3D MAX, Enscape, Lumion, Rhino, Maya, PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign, editing layouts for concept design, design development, and construction drawings, incorporating LEED sustainable design principles into architectural designs, preparing LEED documentation, and 3D energy models to evaluate daily sun exposure, analyze heatloads, and maximize energy savings via Ecotect and Ladybug Tools; coordinate with local architects, consultants, and contractors; coordinate with clients for equipment planning; research domestic and international code compliance under applicable federal, state, or local codes and regulations; coordinate with clients and agencies with jurisdiction to obtain project approvals; coordinate with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, civil, structural, food service, hardware, landscape, code, traffic, parking, concession, public relations, signage, acoustic, security, curtain wall, facade maintenance, acoustic, vertical transportation, lighting, geotechnical, and low voltage/telecommunication consultants to incorporate building systems in construction documents; apply architectural principles to review all related shop drawings, samples, and mock-ups, evaluate general contractor bids and project budgets; manage project data and all electronic communications via Newforma or other approved software; maintain RFI logs and Submittals including date received, date returned, and status of unreturned requests; coordinate with contractors, respond to requests for information (RFI’s), review and respond to contractor change orders and perform necessary modifications of drawings and specifications as construction projects progress and changes in dimensions, materials, and other aspects of design arise; assist the Project Manager in establishing task schedule and manpower requirements consistent with the project agreement; assist in identifying weekly project requirements and projecting long term needs; assist in managing project consultant agreements and project budgets; assist in identifying and quantifying tasks outside the scope of the Owner-Architect agreement for negotiation of additional services; conduct site visits and progress meetings, prepare field observation reports, final inspections, project closeout, including punch lists, and record drawings; review and prepare certificates of substantial completion, occupancy, and final completion; conduct post-occupancy evaluation and review of clients’ use of space.

Responsibilities
