Center Director Job Description

High Hope Center Directors are responsible for setting the positive tone for the facility, managing the curriculum, overseeing physical facilities, hiring staff, and managing the overall image of the center. Job duties include ensuring compliance with local and federal laws governing child care, both regarding the physical environment and the staff, and managing the financial affairs of the child care facility

Primary Purpose:

To coordinate, budget, manage the daily successful operation of the Preschool and supervise employees at High Hope Academy, following the rules and guidelines of Bright From The Start

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal skills with children and adults alike.
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communications skills in order to communicate with parents, staff, and children.
  • Must have strong leadership skills to inspire respect from young children.
  • Must be organized and have a strong business sense.
  • Knowledgeable about the latest trends and techniques in education and child- rearing, including discipline, encouragement, and communication.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough understanding of preschool operations
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, computer and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to coordinate center functions
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Knowledge and implementation of DECAL child care guidelines and state licensing
  • Comprehensive knowledge and proven success implementing programs for children based on developmentally appropriate practices
  • Accepts and respects differences in children, parents and coworkers
  • Ability to manage a budget

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • (Recommended not required) Bachelor’s degree in Education with a concentration in Child Development or Early Childhood
  • Must complete within 90 days of employment, the 40 hour BFTS

Directors Training

  • Must have CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working with children in a teaching position or administering child care.
  • Must pass a background check

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Child Care Director

  • Sets short and long term goals for teaching staff.
  • Keeps accurate files on employees, children, and activities.
  • Conducts interviews and reviews the qualifications of all new staff before hiring the most qualified applicants for teaching, administrative, or support staff positions.
  • Manages the work schedules of teaching and administrative staff.
  • Supervises and leads teaching and administrative staff as they adhere to company standards.
  • Provides feedback for staff on their performance in the classroom.
  • Orders and purchases teaching materials including toys, videos, books, educational aids, cleaning supplies, food, and first aid supplies.
  • Organizes monthly schedules for field trips, special events, and holidays.
  • Meets with teachers and parents to keep parents up to date on their child’s progress and development.
  • Works with teaching staff to find ways to address any behavioral or learning problems.
  • Ensures that the facility and staff adhere to all state and local regulations.

Work Environment

  • Must set the tone for a positive and supportive work environment
  • Time is spent in the preschool facility divided between desk work and supervision of staff.

Must be able to take on classroom duties.

  • Must be willing to spend long hours standing, walking, kneeling, and lifting no more than 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to work some nights and weekends as needed.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management

1. Maintain, at all times, high quality child care standards based on developmentally appropriate practices.

Personnel Management:

2. Supervise all staff members of the child care center, including substitute staff.

3. Oversee hiring process and orientation for all new staff.

4. Train and provide ongoing guidance for all staff

5. Provide accurate and meaningful annual performance evaluations for all child care staff.

Management of Fiscal, Administrative, and Facilities Functions:

6. Develop a budget for the center and establish controls to assure that the center adheres to the budget.

7. Ensure that the program is cost effective and funds are managed prudently.

8. Oversee the day to day functions of the child care center and manage staff.

9. Develop and implement policies and procedures for the operation of the child care center.

10. Assure consistent compliance with all DECAL’s Minimum Standards, including maintenance of annual fire, health and other inspections.

11. Coordinate the annual licensing of the child care center with DECAL.

12. Oversee the maintenance of files according to DECAL’s requirements.

13. Maintain open, consistent and effective communication with parents, providing parent education training, assistance and support as needed.

14. Provide reliable, accurate and timely information about the child care center to interested parties.

15. Attain and maintain membership in National Association for the Education of Young

Children (NAEYC).

16. Assist in other projects as assigned by management.

17. Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of High Hope Academy LLC and follow directives from management.

18. Follow attendance policy as assigned by management.

19. Perform other functions that may be assigned by the management.

Professional Growth and Development:

20. Attend professional development seminars to maintain an understanding of the current best practices of curriculum and administrative functions of child development programs.

21. Oversee the training and professional development of all child care staff.

School or Community Relations:

22. Articulate the center’s mission to employees and solicit support in realizing the mission.

23. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

24. Represent the center in a professional, courteous and positive manner at all times.

25. Promote a positive, caring climate for learning for staff, students, and parents.

26. Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.

27. Communicate effectively staff, students and their families.

Other:

28. Perform any and all duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise all staff of the child care center, including substitute staff.

Working conditions:

Mental demands/Physical demands/Environmental factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Occasional district wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours, frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15,600.00 - $25,255.00 per year

Schedule:

  • 10 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

COVID-19 considerations:
We require employees and children that are old enough to wear masks along with regular cleaning and sanitizing protocol.

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (Required)

Experience:

  • Experience with Children: 3 years (Preferred)
  • Childcare: 3 years (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
