About the Role: As an Employment Specialist, you'll prepare and support adults with developmental disabilities to achieve competitive, community-based employment. You'll work closely with the employment team to ensure successful job placements, maintain existing community and business connections, and cultivate new relationships. Reporting directly to the Career Services Manager, you should be comfortable with public speaking, self-motivated, and able to work autonomously. Outstanding organizational, planning, and time management skills are essential for achieving department goals.

We are currently looking to hire a full-time Employment Specialist to work in our Community Employment Services Program. This position is typically Monday-Friday from 8 AM-4 PM, with flexibility for weekdays, evenings, and weekends when necessary.

Salary: $22.25/HR

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • At least one-year experience working with people with intellectual/developmental disabilities preferred
  • Experience providing employment services preferred
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal – ASL a plus)
  • Comfort with computer-based and internet-based software, including Microsoft Office and Google
  • Experience working with Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) and High School District’s Transition counselors a plus

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to lift/carry up to 44 lbs.
  • Ability to perform basic physical moves such as kneeling, reaching, crouching, bending, and twisting
  • DSP, CPR, and First Aid certification (training provided)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule - weekdays, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to travel between multiple locations throughout the Chicagoland Metro and surrounding suburban regions.
  • Follow Search’s vehicle safety procedures including completing vehicle maintenance reports as requested

  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance REQUIRED
  • Maintain the physical environment, grounds, and vehicles according to Search standards for cleanliness and order on a daily basis
  • Demonstrate respect for program materials and furnishings
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Mission Statement and agency values of Search
  • Assist participants in developing individualized plans for seeking employment, which may include:
  • Development of resumes and cover letters
  • Building a job search network
  • Conducting job searches and identifying job leads
  • Completion and submission of job applications
  • Practice interviewing
  • Communicating with hiring managers
  • Provide comprehensive placement and coaching services, including on-site job coaching and established site check-ins with employers
  • Develop an understanding of various funding streams available to clients and the requirements of each
  • Conduct initial intake and vocational assessments
  • Continuously review individual participant progress toward employment, and re-assess and revise as needed
  • Maintain documentation and recordkeeping on individuals’ progress on goals established in their service plans and descriptions of services provided
  • Document participant progress and activity using electronic case management software
  • Convene with the interdisciplinary team for each individual assigned to your caseload; initiate, coordinate and monitor the interdisciplinary team process, assure participation of team members and the individual
  • Advocate for individual rights and services
  • Ensure services specified in the service plan are being provided
  • Ensure service plans, assessments, and goal progress are completed according to established timelines
  • Provide ongoing job coaching, while developing natural supports at community-based work locations
  • Develop relationships with potential employers and engage in ongoing face-to-face, phone, and email communication to develop job leads
  • Participate in regular team meetings
  • Pursue employer outreach activities to leverage employment opportunities
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities by working cooperatively with Search colleagues, encouraging teamwork, respecting differing viewpoints, and demonstrating the ability to solve problems creatively from an agency-wide perspective
  • Collaborate with the Search team on the ongoing development and expansion of its services designed to empower persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential, accept a valued role in the community, and lead rich, rewarding lives
  • Present yourself professionally as a representative of Search to family members, guardians, employers, community members, and representatives of affiliated agencies
  • Maintain compliance with personnel policies as stated in the employee handbook
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Corporate Compliance policy including the employee work rules and state/federal regulations related to services provided by Search
  • Complete incident reports according to policy
  • Complete other duties as assigned by your supervisor
