JOB PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Pianist position is an assignment that utilizes the incumbent’s gifts in a professional demeanor in support of the worship services of The Worship Place (TWP) through careful preparation and offering of music selections on the piano to enhance the worship experience.
The Pianist accompanies special music selections and coordinates with the Minister of Music (SC) on offertories and special selections.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor’s degree in music or a related field is preferred, but not required. Extensive musical training and experience in a variety of musical styles and professional training in piano and music theory is preferred with a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a church Pianist.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Pianist at the Sun City campus will assist the Minister of Music (SC) with music for worship services, special events, and activities as requested. The Pianist will rehearse with and accompany the Choir on a weekly basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Pianist will perform, direct, and supervise the performance of the following primary functions under the direction of the Minister of Music (SC) with the overall oversight of the Board of Trustees for (TWP) and in accordance with the church’s Constitution and By-laws. This will include, but not be limited to:
1. Selecting and providing piano music at morning worship service and all other scheduled special celebrations of worship at TWP (SC) as needed. The Pianist is expected to have and continue to build a repertoire of appropriate musical selections for preludes, offerings, responses, communion music and postlude.
2. Rehearsing with and accompanying choir, instrumentalists, and small groups as scheduled for worship services throughout the year by the Minister of Music at TWP (SC).
3. Having a printed copy of music or bringing it on a digital device
4. Being prepared with prelude and/or communion music when requested by the Minister of Music (SC).
5. Providing music for special events and activities when approved by the Minister of Music (SC).
6. Practicing with soloists or musical groups as requested and approved by the Minister of Music (SC)
7. Providing appropriate music for special services, scoring music when necessary, and arranging music to support specific need(s)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & EXPECTATIONS
- Strong commitment to Jesus Christ and a sense of calling to His service
- Excellent piano performance and accompaniment skills
- Knowledge of music theory, including transpositions and harmonizing
- Ability to:
Sight read, modulate, play with rhythmic integrity, and embellish musical scores
Transpose music and play transcriptions
Improvise alternate hymn accompaniments
Accompany vocalists on the piano
Work as a “team player” in a church setting with staff, musicians, and volunteers
Support the Minister of Music (SC) with effective rehearsal techniques
- Excellent time management skills
- Expected to work up to 10 hours per week, but could be asked to work more on special occasions/activities and for special holiday celebrations
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $33.00 - $38.00 per hour
