Summary
- Manages and directs the activities of the laboratory staff.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities
- Organizes and directs the laboratory personnel in sampling and testing programs; directs the efficient operation of the laboratory; and is responsible for the legal defensibility of work performed in the laboratory.
- Delegates duties and responsibilities to the laboratory staff; and establishes department priorities and resolves conflict.
- Coordinates process control with the Operations Supervisor.
- Establishes standards for sample collection and analyses to determine compliance; performs chemical and biological tested as needed; and draws conclusion from laboratory analyses and, as needed, makes appropriate recommendations.
- Directs the preparation of required regulatory agency reports and special projects; and presents reports on laboratory analytical findings.
- Prepares an annual budget for laboratory services; oversees inventory control program; and conducts training classes on subject including laboratory procedures, math, statistics, quality assurance, and sampling to plant personnel.
- Coordinates special projects requested by project management; and selects and organizes outside laboratory services as required.
- Manages laboratory safety and QA programs; and industrial pretreatment program.
- Aggressively supervises USFOS plant to assure work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.
- Maintains computer database of laboratory data.
- Promotes morale, and provides staff with atmosphere of open communication, innovation, and job growth.
Qualifications
Education / Experience / Background
- A four-year degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry or related field. Proficiency at college level mathematics.
- Five years of experience in a working laboratory performing chemical and biological analyses, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification as a RI Class II wastewater operator within one year of appointment to Laboratory Supervisor.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- In depth knowledge of the principles and practices of waste water chemistry. Familiarity with waste water test equipment and its maintenance.
- Experience in applying technical information to wastewater treatment; a thorough knowledge of laboratory procedures, techniques, and instrumentation; and a good working knowledge of chemistry, biology, statistics, and quality control.
- The ability to supervise the work of subordinates, discipline and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and outside officials.
- Ability to understand and express complex written and verbal instructions clearly and concisely.
- Ability to work in various positions which require standing (70%), walking (10%), sitting (10%), and bending (10%).
- Must be able to lift and carry 60 pounds while walking distances of 10 feet.
- Normally works in an air-conditioned laboratory but will need to work anywhere in the plant at times.
- Requires using chemicals and cleaning solvents to maintain and repair equipment.
- A working knowledge of the standard practices, common tools, materials, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Requires good reading skills; and excellent training, math, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Requires the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Requires ability to plan, organize, train, and functionally supervise subordinates.
- Requires proficiency in projecting positive corporate image; the ability to solve complex process problems; and have excellent analytical skills.
- Must possess professional integrity and confidentiality and have the ability to work well and communicate with clients, upper management, and the general public; and to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
Required Certification / Licenses / Training
- Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
