Are Minimum Wages Going Up July 1?
New minimum wage rates go into effect on July 1 in nine states (including Washington, D.C.) and many cities. There are also changes to how state laws treat tipped workers and how that affects minimum wage.
And remember, minimum wage workers must also be paid overtime when it applies. Overtime varies by state law too. For example, California requires overtime whenever an employee works more than eight hours in a day, whether or not they work more than 40 hours that week.
Wage and hour laws are continually changing and time-consuming to track. The best approach is to outsource your payroll to a reputable provider who can handle it in every state, city, and country you have employees and watch for updates from your friendly employment lawyers.
Also, wage and hour violations can be extremely expensive nightmares for employers, especially when the problem applies to all your employees. Prevention is the way.
So, if you pay employees minimum wage or have tipped employees, check the article and interactive map below to find out if you need to make changes in your pay rates.
