When the manager is the problem, start by calling legal. We are always happy to make the tough call, back it up with solid arguments and advice, and even take the blame for upsetting decisions. And we will tell you the truth about what the risks are, help you weigh potential options, and be your partner every step of the way.
During the holidays, germs get to go on trips and to parties too! There is lots of spreading joy and viruses. And then the kids go back to school. This is why I suggest that employers frontload paid sick days to make the time available at the beginning of the year when employees are most likely to need them.
If you're struggling to sort out employee phone and other reimbursement requests, make sure you consider more than the cost. Talk to your friendly employment lawyer about privacy and access issues when there might be important company information on an employee's device.
When an employee requests military leave because they or their immediate family members have been called to duty, first say yes, because you don't really have a choice. While the administration of military leave is probably the least of both the employer's and the employee's worries when someone is called up to active duty, it's important to be familiar with the laws that apply in case you need them.
Before you start to imagine the quantified employee, make sure that the devices you use and data you are collecting don't violate privacy and civil rights laws.
