A provisional psychologist is an individual who has completed their university-level psychology degree and is in the process of gaining practical experience under supervised conditions. Their primary role is to develop and refine their applied psychological skills through supervised practice, which is a mandatory requirement for registration as a fully registered psychologist. This period typically lasts at least two years and involves regular, often weekly, supervision sessions with an approved supervisor registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). During this time, provisional psychologists gain hands-on experience in assessment, intervention, and ethical practice, gradually building their competence and confidence to work independently as qualified psychologists.
