Not all states in the United States require licensing for naturopathic doctors. As of October 2023, only 16 states have established licensing laws that regulate the practice of naturopathy, including Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Washington. In these states, naturopathic doctors must meet specific educational and professional standards, pass licensing examinations, and adhere to state regulations to legally practice. However, in many other states, naturopaths may operate without formal licensure, which can impact the scope of practice, legal protections, and public safety considerations. Therefore, if you are seeking naturopathic care, it is important to verify the licensing status in your state to ensure the practitioner is properly credentialed and regulated.
