Becoming a retina surgeon requires a significant amount of specialized training beyond general medical education. Initially, one must complete an undergraduate bachelor's degree, which typically takes four years. Following this, aspiring physicians attend medical school for another four years to earn their MD or DO degree. After medical school, they undertake a one-year internship, often in internal medicine or surgery, to gain foundational clinical experience. Subsequently, they enter a three-year residency in ophthalmology, during which they acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in eye care and surgery. To specialize further in retinal diseases, they then pursue a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal medicine and surgery. Overall, the process takes approximately 14 years after high school, reflecting the extensive training required to become a qualified retina surgeon.
