Becoming a pediatric dentist typically requires approximately 11 to 12 years of education and training. The process begins with earning a bachelor's degree, which usually takes four years and provides foundational knowledge in sciences or related fields. Following this, aspiring dentists must complete four years of dental school to obtain a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. After dental school, candidates must undertake specialized training in pediatric dentistry through a residency program that lasts about two to three years. This residency provides hands-on experience in treating children and managing their dental health, ultimately preparing the individual to become a licensed pediatric dentist.
