Doctors receive their income primarily through salaries, which can vary greatly depending on their practice setting and medical specialty. Hospital-employed doctors receive salaries and bonuses from the hospital administration. Medical school professors working in hospitals receive salaries from the schools and grants they have obtained. Doctors who have their own clinics bill public and private payers for the medical procedures they perform on patients, and the payers will reimburse some or all of the bills submitted by the doctors.
