What is BCLS certification?

The BCLS certification, also known as Basic Cardiac Life Support certification, is a medical certification that demonstrates a nurse‘s ability to manage cardiopulmonary arrest, cardiovascular emergencies, and emergency responses. Administered by the American Hospital Association (AHA), this certification is required for registered nurses working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) or with adults. To obtain the BCLS certification, nurses must first become registered nurses and obtain the Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. The BCLS certification is valid for two years and can be renewed through an abbreviated course. This certification is valuable for nurses, doctors, firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
