Why is engineering referred to as the stealth profession?

Engineering, often referred to as the stealth profession, is not widely recognized or understood by the general public despite the fact that many of the innovations we rely on daily are the result of engineering. Before the 2000s, the term "stealth profession" was commonly used due to the lack of awareness about engineers and their work. However, as technology advances and people become more informed, the term is gradually becoming less prevalent.
