Job Description

The Certified Veterinary Technician collects and documents case history and treatment details. Assist veterinarian with exams, surgeries, and first aid. Being a Certified Veterinary Technician take X rays, EKG, Ultrasound, and perform various lab test including urinalysis and blood counts. Monitors vital signs and condition of animals being treated and provides nursing care. In addition, Certified Veterinary Technician depending on state regulations, may administer anesthesia, injections, and perform dental prophylaxis, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian. Instructs pet owners on how to administer medication and other animal care skills. Typically requires an associate's degree. Depending on state, may require RVT certification.Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Being a Certified Veterinary Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job. Working as a Certified Veterinary Technician typically requires 3-5 years of related experience, or may need 2 years experience with additional specialized training and/or certification.
