Job Description
The Genetics Counselor- Board Certified obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Being a Genetics Counselor- Board Certified may provide crisis intervention as needed. Recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. In addition, Genetics Counselor- Board Certified requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. Genetics Counselor- Board Certified's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position's specialty is the main requirement.
