What is an Electrician?

An electrician installs and maintains electrical wiring and circuits in a building. They troubleshoot problems with electrical systems and repair or replace the wiring or switches that are causing the problem. Work performed by electricians must adhere to The National Electrical Code (NEC) "code", which is a set of standards to ensure the safety and stability of electrical systems. Electricians may work on new construction or specialize in electrical systems used by large commercial systems, like power plants and factories.

What training or educational requirements does an electrician need?

Electricians typically have a high school diploma. An apprenticeship is the most common path to becoming a licensed electrician. Apprenticeship programs take four or five years to complete and consist of working alongside a licensed electrician to complete a required number of hours of supervised work. Typically a journeyman exam must be taken and passed to obtain a state license. More experienced electricians may obtain a Master Electrician license by passing an advanced exam that allows the electrician to do contracting. Many electricians start by completing a trade school program as preparation to an apprenticeship. Some schools sponsor apprenticeship programs that combine an apprenticeship with supplemental courses.
