What does a Dean of Law do?

A Dean of Law manages administrative functions of the college of law. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Law leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Law requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Law manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Law typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.

In order to drive yourself and your team to success, in a management position you need to have a broad base of skills.  For success in this position, you effeciency with these skills is key: Capital Budgeting, Curriculum Planning and Development, Data Analysis, Donor Relations, Education Management, Educational Program Management, Educational Technology, Performance Management Programs, Research Documentation, Strategy Development, Technology Integration, Academic Administration, Academic Focus: Law, Institutional Research, Long Term Planning.  For this role, you will need to be adept in with: Learning Management System (LMS) Software, Student Information Systems (SIS).  Although every company varies in their requirements, these competencies will help you in this role.
